SMS Supercars releases new renderings, more details of 460 Mustang
It appears that even while covering Saleen, Inc's warranties and protecting the brand image of his name, Steve Saleen has still found the time to build cars. After launching the 570 Challenger back in January and the 570X Challenger at the New York Auto Show, SMS has released additional renderings and information on its upcoming 460 and 460X Mustang. According to SMS, the car is in its final prototype testing changes and will hit the market some time later this year.
From the look of the CAD illustrations, designer Phil Frank stuck to much of the styling cues that made the original S197 Saleen Mustangs so popular. The front end gets a blacked-out grille with horizontal bars and the SMS logo, a more aggressive front fascia, and a dual-vented hood. Side skirts lead into the diffuser-style rear fascia, and like the Saleen S281, the rear end is elongated and the taillights are recessed, complimented to a spoiler that follows the lines of the car.
Performance upgrades sound like Saleen Mustangs of past as well. The supercharged 4.6-liter V8 produces either 470 or 655 horsepower, and each car gets upgraded brakes and suspension system including a Watts-linkage to help plant the solid rear axle. SMS claims the 460 Mustang will hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds while the 460X should do the deed in four seconds flat. You can view all the details in the press release after the jump, and we've included the two new renderings in the gallery below.

PRESS RELEASE:
Orange County, California. (July 20, 2009) Yesterday, Steve Saleen and his company SMS Supercars unveiled the first CAD illustrations of the 2010 SMS 460 Mustang at the "Mustangs Northwest Roundup" event in Seattle. The SMS 460 Mustang will be the only Mustang authorized to bear Steve Saleen's name, to use the benefit of his heritage and to incorporate his performance innovations derived from over thirty years of racing and manufacturing experience. Steve Saleen, President and CEO of SMS Supercars: "The SMS 460 Mustang embodies everything I stand for. It reflects my unrivalled tenure in the Mustang business, my passion and love for the Mustang brand."
The SMS 460 Mustang's striking design separates it from any other vehicle in the market. Chief Creative Officer of SMS, Phil Frank notes, "Steve Saleen's new SMS 460 Mustang is a dramatic, timeless and iconic visual statement that confidently leads the pack, continuing the evolution of the image of the Steve Saleen brand." The SMS 460 Mustang is in final tooling and prototype testing stages and the market launch is planned for later this year.
The SMS 460 Mustang will offer a 4.6 liter V8 engine featuring 470 hp and 427 ft-lb of torque, while the even more powerful SMS 460X Mustang engine with all new internals and extensive headwork pumps out 655 hp and 600 ft-lb from the enlarged 5.0 liter V8. Both use the new (patent pending) SMS 296 Supercharger for their incredible horsepower and torque gains. Transmission options are a 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual on the 460 or a 6-speed SMST manual on the top of the line 460X. Performance for both cars is striking.
The SMS 460 Mustang accelerates from 0 to 60 in under 4.5 seconds, while the 460X manages the same in closer to 4. In addition to engine output, handling, road holding and braking improvements, the 2010 SMS 460 Mustangs will feature Steve's signature Watt's linkage suspension with all-new geometry. New SMS 15" six piston front and 13" four piston rear brakes deliver impressive stopping power to match the jaw-dropping acceleration. The SMS 460X Mustang will also feature the unique (patent-pending) Steve Saleen Red Butterfly Induction System. The interior with all-new Alcantara and leather SMS performance seats features the patented Signature Series chevron stripes. Multiple seat chevron and SMS unique exterior colors are available through the SMS Tailor Made options.

It seems odd to have both a rear spoiler and a rear wing. It would look great minus the wing.

Wow! This looks amazing!!
Good job SMS Supercars!
This looks very good!
I love how the Mustangs of today are becoming more beautiful with every passing year!
First the New 2010 Mustang, then the Shelby Gt500, then the Roush 427R, then the SMS 460 Mustang...
...do I smell MACH1s in teh airs?

I love this car until all that craziness aft of the C-Pillar.
This is current generation Sebring bad. Come on Mr. Saleen better is expected of you.
Tail pipes = HORRIBLE, Just plain UGLY.
That Spoiler / Wing pile up on the rear deck lid is piss poor. (if wing is needed, something that evokes SVO, could be nice if well executed).
The faux-diffuser thingy + the cute leetle badges + black out panels + Ford's stylized rear treatment, all combined to create what we in the military call a CLUSTER PHUCK.

Goodness!!! There are more styles of aftermarket mustangs than cars on the whole ford line!

It looks alright but it's missing the "Saleen" factor.

Not enough slats.
I do like how someone has FINALLY split the grille from the headlights.
The back end still isn't good, but the extensions are better than the stock rear treatment. Smoke the tail lights, to black out the whole span, (I know... what I hated about the stock front, the rear needs.)
It's still a mustang, and a hella-expensive one, likely. But at least it is a slight visual improvement. Every mustang tuner and their dog gets horsepower out of those cars.
Now if someone could actually fit an independent suspension to one... maybe that might actually be worthy of a headline.

Another moded Mustang. Really? There was just a huge hole in the market where the public did not have enough choices. If anyone could pull off yet another performace Mustang, I have faith that SMS will be one of the best.

I like it, the changes are subtle and not so far over the top like so many other after market mustangs that seemed to be designed specifically for 16 year olds

The 2 generations old Saleens were nice and had some wow factor. The previous and this iteration just look like something with tons of plastic parts slapped on by some teenager. If there is anything old Steve should do is to improve on a sense of aesthetics. This is after all the man who said in a TV interview, of the S7, that a Supercar is measured by number of vents it has in the body work. This isn't the 1980s anymore. Tackiness is out.

What internet have you been on? Tackiness is out? Have you seen a "custom" car in the last decade? I guess you spend a lot of time on VWVortex :-)
tuna 6:16PM (7/22/2009)
I don't spend any time on VWvortex. Apparently you do if you think custom cars have to be tacky.
Redline 5:59PM (7/22/2009)
Maybe I don't get the styling, but that rear end is ugleeeee.

This should be the first photo that comes up on Google image search for "Mullet-Mobile".

Since 16 of the top 20 images are Camaros, (the others are two of a Gremlin, a GNX, and a lifted Toyota pickup) I'd say the S460 has it's bangs, er work cut out for it.

Steve who? Looks surprisingly tasteful!

I think that looks bad-ass, and damn 655 hp? This thing is going to eat Camaro's for breakfast. I thought I read somewhere that either the Saleen or Roush were going to make a 700+ supercharged variant of the Mustang, is that right?
