Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG Black Edition spotted on the 'Ring

It's hard not to think about the prodigious power slated to appear in the Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG Black Edition. A twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 with 670 hp and and an absurd 738 lb-ft of torque can do that. Factor in a 570-lb weight loss courtesy of exotic materials, and you've got a Benz that can flat destroy almost anything else on the road.
World Car Fans has obtained video of the still-disguised SL65 Black Edition in action cruising the Nürburgring, and the few seconds of action caught on tape shows that the battle for 'Ring supremacy is far from over. The SL65 is shown taking corners at speed and sounding like a jet aircraft. The GT-R may be grabbing the 'Ring headlines now, but it looks like the Germans are preparing to defend their home turf, and in a big way. Look out, Godzilla. 738 lb-ft of torque?! Thats insanity, tire spin all the way to third gear insanity.
I can only wonder how much this would cost...

Nah, electronic nannies will take care of that.
Cary 1:26AM (5/25/2008)
No, they wont. My C63 beats the proverbial sh-t out of the 'nannies' and I've got only 451bhp. The ESP system cant do anything other than ATTEMPT to stop the spinning of the wheels. The only thing that can prevent the wheels from spinning is me. I'm sure that SL65-BS will do a BIT more of the same.

Sure it will defeat any godzilla, with that much of propulsive warp-power!

What a promotional tool the 'ring has become, almost like what the car is like in the real world is irrelevant.

I think this may beat the GT-R, but it's not just the GT-R's ring time, it's a combo of it's ring time and it's avalibility AND price that is amazing. Mercedes said they are only planning about 350 of these to be made...and how much will they cost!!!??? GT-R...after enough are made...should start to lose some mark-ups and get closer to MSRP, which is an amazing $75,000 or so. This is a neat car...really neat, but it's just not the same AMAZING combo of factors that the GT-R is.

will brabus take a poke at the sl65 too i wonder? 1000lb-ft +??

Brabus limits torque. 1000 would be too much, the wheels would do nothing but spin. I think they limit torque at somewhere near 811 lbft.

pd you are absolutely right. I believe this car will completely off the chain no matter how it does on the ring.
As to the price I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 250k plus.

If only they'd harness all those torques with an AWD system.

And to think, some goons would rather buy the new Ferrari California over this Mercedes(!). I'm sure this car will cost more than the Ferrari, but when you have enough money to buy or the other, what's a few (hundred) thousand dollars?

Hey terrific! Benz can make a car that's probably about as fast as a GT-R or Z06 and it only costs 2.5-3 times as much! Also, like all Benzs, it will break down all the time and need be maintained by guys named Jurgen who only work in clean rooms for $500/hour! Also, it's a leisurely GT platform desinged to be driven around Naples, FL by 80 year olds that has been forced into sportscar service! Wow! What an accomplishment!

In a straight this will make the z06 and gtr look like they are not moving.
The GTR is going to require extensive dealer maintenance so dont kid yourself there.

lol, this, like a 7 series, is all about the fact that you have one. no matter what it's still bad ass.
Cary 1:32AM (5/25/2008)
Are you kidding me? I'm sick of all the Goddamn people like you who haven't a clue. I'm on my 5th Benz and still none of these elusive "constantly breaking down" issues. Oh, wait, that's right, I don't rely on Consumer Reports as my primary source of product reliability. I rely on real life experience.

Question for y'all:
Why do top end Benzes not get as much attention as cars with similar performance figures like Ferrari, Lamborgini, or Porsche?
They cost about the same...
