UPDATE: Ed Hellwig from the Straighline Blog totally
click above image for high-res gallery of Toyota's FT-HS Concept

Toyota's next-generation Supra is veiled in mystery, but we tend to take seriously any news coming from Winding Road's Peter Nunn because, well, he actually lives in Japan and hears the hometown gossip. According to Nunn, rumor has it that the next-gen Supra's design will be inspired by the FT-HS Concept, which we kinda sort of already knew, and be powered by either a hybrid drivetrain or an all-gas V6.

The last issue of Automobile Magazine claimed that the FT-HS Concept would go into production as Toyota's Supra successor, but made no mention of another all-gas version. WR's Nunn, however, speculates that the car will be offered with either an updated version of the 3.5L V6 from the Lexus IS350 producing around 330bhp and a V6 hybrid drivetrain likely scooped from the Lexus GS450h and producing 400bhp.

The all-gas Supra would obviously be less expensive than the hybrid version, and thus would likely be the volume seller of the two. Looks like we're expecting both to arrive sometime in the latter half of 2008, though any details having to do with Toyota's plans for the Supra are obviously about as firm as Jell-o.

Umm...ok "bernie." I bet you are from Tokyo, sir. The renderings of the next Supra indicate that this car is not for serious professionals...but is in fact for teenagers. The front end is not subtle, composed, and humble. But is instead melting, presumptuous, and possibly used for snow collection. The rear is marginally any different. But if you're talking about the side profile I understand, as it does look fantastic.

But I don't think this is what consumers will see in the end anyway. No, Toyota will bland this car up a bit so that it fits in the crowd like an old Celica. Nonetheless, if Toyota wants to sell this car, anything above $35,000 USD will not work, no matter if it reaches 100mpg on the highway. Because a lot of the consumers looking for high-priced coupes are not looking for a high priced tC.

I have to say I'm a little disappointed. While those HP numbers are fine for a middle-agers sedan such as the IS350 (or a young adult's, if it came with a proper transmission), I don't think it is very "worthy" of the legendary Supra.

But then again... I realize the N/A Supra wasn't a supercar either.

Do you think Lexus will do a TT version of this? That should be interesting.

I'm enjoying the conversations comparing the GTO (the 21st centry Aussie version) with this FT-HS concept-possibly-Supra. There is a reason why Pontiac dealers didn't want to stock the new goat, and why it was discontinued: IT DIDN'T SELL!
Face it: it had NO sex appeal, and the FT-HS does.

Volvo stopt making the 2.9 I6 in 2003, and they have no plans of making a new I6 for the new S80.

BMW is actualy the last big manufacturer that makes I6's. Nissan stopt making them in 2002, and almost all of toyota's I6's have been replaced by GR v6 engines.

I don't think the GTO is any faster than this hybrid supra, can a GTO do 0-60 in 4 seconds i dont think so.

And the most important can a GTO take a corner, you probably know the answer.

And another fact the GTO looks like crap i never heard anyone say that they liked the looks of the GTO.

Ah I love the prejudice on these posts sometimes.

At this point in time it looks very 'meh' to me. I preferred the old concept (that may have been a photoshop) that was released about 1 year ago. That was nicer.

Thear wont be a TT version because that would compete with the lexus LF-A.

And i realy like the design of the FT-HS, 330BHP is perfect thats about the same as the 2009 nissan 370z.
