UPDATE: Ed Hellwig from the Straighline Blog totally disagrees.

Toyota's next-generation Supra is veiled in mystery, but we tend to take seriously any news coming from Winding Road's Peter Nunn because, well, he actually lives in Japan and hears the hometown gossip. According to Nunn, rumor has it that the next-gen Supra's design will be inspired by the FT-HS Concept, which we kinda sort of already knew, and be powered by either a hybrid drivetrain or an all-gas V6.
The last issue of Automobile Magazine claimed that the FT-HS Concept would go into production as Toyota's Supra successor, but made no mention of another all-gas version. WR's Nunn, however, speculates that the car will be offered with either an updated version of the 3.5L V6 from the Lexus IS350 producing around 330bhp and a V6 hybrid drivetrain likely scooped from the Lexus GS450h and producing 400bhp.
The all-gas Supra would obviously be less expensive than the hybrid version, and thus would likely be the volume seller of the two. Looks like we're expecting both to arrive sometime in the latter half of 2008, though any details having to do with Toyota's plans for the Supra are obviously about as firm as Jell-o.

Finally Toyota will have a sporty car.

As bizarre and ungainly as a '58 Buick.

I like the FT-HS. I also like the Acura Advance Coupe concept. I just wish they looked a little more different from one another!

I have to say I'm a little disappointed. While those HP numbers are fine for a middle-agers sedan such as the IS350 (or a young adult's, if it came with a proper transmission), I don't think it is very "worthy" of the legendary Supra.
But then again... I realize the N/A Supra wasn't a supercar either.
Do you think Lexus will do a TT version of this? That should be interesting.
testa di cazzo @ May 29th 2007 1:13PM
just another rice-rocket. i would rather walk than be caught sitting in that ugly turd. seriously, can you imagine anyone other than an asian kid with pimples driving that thing?

Thear wont be a TT version because that would compete with the lexus LF-A.
And i realy like the design of the FT-HS, 330BHP is perfect thats about the same as the 2009 nissan 370z.

If they make this with the removable top that the concept had, I will buy it. A 400 hp hybrid targa sports car...count me in...
rrr @ May 29th 2007 1:31PM
I love the way this car looks, i saw it up close at the Autoshow...it is even better looking.
This will be interesting to see, Mustang, Camaro, Charger, now this.
Carlos @ May 29th 2007 1:43PM
I don't expect this to happen; we've been let down enough times since rumors first started in 2004.
But if Toyota were to make a hybrid sports car, they could get away with the PR benefits of a hybrid and the volume of an all-gas model by quietly releasing the all-gas version some time after the hybrid. That's what I'd do, anyway.

testa di cazzo (means ignoramous in Italian):
I am in my 50s and haven't had a pimple in decades. I would pay big bucks for the honor of driving this "turd" or the GT-R for 5 minutes.
Keep your attitude and your cheaply made Corvette and your ghetto wanker Chargers that fall apart and lose resale value in a matter of seconds. I suppose you have a sizzling hot Australian turd (GTO) in your garage right now. These cars from Japan are hot. The wannabees from the US are anything but.
willem @ May 29th 2007 2:14PM
All of this coming from a company that can't even make a camshaft that doesn't snap...
Daniel @ May 29th 2007 2:15PM
build it just like this...I will start saving my pennies for the hybrid version....SICK.
stefan @ May 29th 2007 2:27PM

That all is from a company that has been number one in quality for 20 years.
Tyo @ May 29th 2007 2:30PM
The Most recent GTO would walk all over this pile of v6 garbage. Those GTO's get no respect, 400hp over 20mpg, a functional backseat, it's the grown up camaro and i cant wait a few more years when people start selling them off. Ill laugh right past these new hybrid supras at the stoplight.
John R @ May 29th 2007 11:23PM
Yes, well if you say a GTO "will walk all over this V6 garbage" I wonder what an STi would do:

Gonna say I am completely in agreement with ya. The GTOs don't get nearly enough respect. The best looking ones are the plain ones - no vents/scoops and maybe a lip spoiler. Also, how common a name is Tyo? Is that like...the French Taillon?
Tyo @ May 31st 2007 9:21AM
Yeah exactly like the French Taillion. I'm in upstate new york and in parts of the state the names pretty popular. Ive always wanted a silver GTO without any of the extra stuff. STS makes an excellent rear mounted turbo kit for these cars. It's my dream sleeper
stefan @ May 29th 2007 2:42PM
#tyo
I don't think the GTO is any faster than this hybrid supra, can a GTO do 0-60 in 4 seconds i dont think so.
And the most important can a GTO take a corner, you probably know the answer.
And another fact the GTO looks like crap i never heard anyone say that they liked the looks of the GTO.
RACER X @ May 29th 2007 2:52PM
I like the looks of the GTO.
And the GTO was 0-60 in like 4.7. The Supra Hybrid will probably beat it to 60 because of the Electric motor producing peak power off the line but the GTO will still waste it in the quarter mile. Because the Electric motor will most likely turn off and it'll go all-gas.
And the GTO can take corners, it's not like a live-axle Mustang it's got IRS.
P.S. You're an idiot.
