An anonymous tipper has just informed us that Hertz will be auctioning off a large batch of its very exclusive rental car, the Shelby Mustang GT-H, to Ford dealers from Thursday, December 7th through December 21st. If we understand our source correctly, six auctions will occur around the country beginning in Manheim, PA, then moving to Hayward, CA; Denver, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia; Fontanca, CA; and finally back to Manheim, PA. 113 models of the Shelby GT-H, all used as rental cars, will be auctioned off in total, with each auction getting 15 - 20 units to sell.
Dealers who score a GT-H have their choice of driving around in a very rare modern collectible, using the car as showroom eye candy at their dealerships, or even potentially selling the car at a price that will certainly be unreasonable. If you're a Mustang fan, however, and really want a GT-H, petition your local Ford dealer to attend one of these auctions and get you one at all costs.

If anyone in New England gets one of these beauties, please let me know!
I'd love to feature it on my home page, and possibly auction it off as a featured vehicle!

I rented Shelby GT-H in Southern CA back in September for a week (#06H478), had a blast! I kept rental agreement and took many photos, the new owner may want these as part of his collection!

I am sure the Shelby GT-H is a good car, but not worth the prices that will be demanded of them. Ford has tossed around a $36K price figure. Ford should have dropped it down to, at most, $30K flat.
Car videos & Motorcycle videos @ Dec 6th 2006 1:39AM
I agree 36K is a little steep for this car the GT500 is too close to that price to pass it up.

I suppose that price figure is even more important when you consider that these cars are all obviously abused (and rightfully so ;) when they are rented from Hertz.
Toolz @ Dec 6th 2006 8:05AM
You don't marry prostitutes why would you want to own a used rental car?
carguy @ Dec 6th 2006 8:56AM
The price tag can be warranted by knowing that so long as there is a willing buyer at a particular price point, then the price tag is justified!
I would have loved to rent one of these, but they were all out when I had the chance!

You can buy the exact same car, except without a rental history, with the choice of a proper manual, and in white instead of back:
http://www.fordvehicles.com/features/news/detail/index.asp?id=1553
Car and Driver actually claimed to like the setup of this car more than the GT500, so the white, non rental car version of it might be the way to go.
With regard to the GT-H version, to paraphrase toolz, "you can't turn a ho into a housewife." I bet the regular Shelby GTs will for for more money that the GT-Hs when they both hit Ford Dealers.

One thing you fail to remember is that there are only 500 of these units in existence (maybe less if any were totalled).
That alone will keep the price of the nicer/low mileage ones in the $50k plus range.
What do I know? @ Dec 6th 2006 2:53PM
Twenty years from now, a properly restored one might be worth more. But for now, it would take a steep discount to get me into one.

"Petition your local Ford dealer to attend one of these auctions and get you one at all costs."
- I usually like autoblog and reading all the latest news and such. But, this seriously is the stupidest thing i've read, to date. I'm a car dealer down here in Arizona and just chuckled when I read that. Manheim dealer auctions are clearly that, dealer auctions. With a set of nationwide rules and such where it is NEVER open to the public and is strictly to dealers. No dealership out there has the "say" on letting the public in, and why would they? If your were to petetion anyone, it would be Manheim Auctions. And even then they wouldnt break any rules and such by allowing any general public into them.. Get your shit together and facts straight before typing a statement. Seems like a twelve year old took the keyboard and finished up the article for you.

"Petition your local Ford dealer to attend one of these auctions and get you one at all costs."
hey Loai,
Although the wording could go either way, I think what he meant was to call your local ford dealer and express your interest in a gt-h, thus prompting them to attend the auction in person or on-line and secure a gt-h for them.
Thanks autoblog for the heads up. I work at a Lincoln Mercury dealer in NH, and lobbied with my boss today to buy one of the gt-h's. your're blog post was accurate as there was about 15 or so gt-h's all with 10k miles and under on the run list for tomorrows PA auction. hopefully we'll get one. i'll post tomorrow afternoon if we do.

I rented one of these in Orlando. It had two hundred miles on it and I drove the snot out of it for three days. I used the low gear on the slushbox to hear that sweet sound at the redline at every stoplight. Anyone who buys one of these should budget for lots of oil and an early engine change.
And, as I suspected car dealers are not capable of understanding the meaning of words when they are grouped together to form a sentence.

Just had a ride in one. Awesome, and quite a looker. (Daughter rented for her Hubby's 30th B-Day today) They drove OC to San Diego & back. Lot of funn, yes he "drove the SNOT out of it". Was # 268. 4 yr old Grandson, who was in back seat in his car seat all day said HE want's one when HE can drive. Grandpa (ME - 59) wants one too.

The GT-H cars will be worth more in the long run. Ever seen what the first GT-H Mustangs go for now vs. their non-GT-H counterparts? If you had a chance at one of these cars, and you are young, youd be stupid not to buy one, store it away and wait till its about 25-30 years old, then rake in the profits.

It all depends if you want the vehicle.
Rental car or not that has very little to do with the whole sequence of events.
Depends on the car itself- what your alternatives are , condition , pricing.
There is only one Mona Lisa - if you want you want it.
If not walk away.
