Spy Shots: Porsche 911 GT2 Type 997
Although we brought you some information about this car just a couple of months ago, World Car Fans has captured a few more pics of the new 997 GT2 lapping the 'ring and we felt like we had to share. After all, it's probably going to be the first 911 production car capable of 200 mph, so we don't expect that you'll complain. As we pointed out last time, the official word on this model is that it doesn't exist. Maybe Porsche wants to make sure all of the GT3 RS models are spoken for first. But as we see, it is very much real. With the 997 Turbo putting out 480 hp already, the GT2 should be good for at least 500. In fact 520-540 are the numbers we keep coming across. Although it looks a lot like the Turbo, the GT2 has a few detail changes, like the lack of fog lamps and a larger rear spoiler. Couple that with the expected weight loss associated with the switch from awd to rwd, and this should be another super Porsche worthy of the Widowmaker label. But the guys at World Car Fans point out that it is the sound that will really set this model apart from lesser 911s. Caught testing at the Nürburgring, they said it could be heard almost half way around the track. But it was music to their ears, as is this report of further development on the GT2 to ours.

This car is going to have more power than the Vette, less drivetrain loss, and handle better. Try again looser.

LOL, sure a Vette may be able to beat this car for half the price but who would really choose the vette over this car?

I think the best car you could bream to buy is the Porsche 911 993, the last of the air-cooled Porsches. I had the pleasure of driving one once round a track. I long for the day that one will be mine. You have to have dreams. From James at Used Car Parts

LMAO. Vette? LOL I would never get a Vette over this car. Who cares if it's half the price? Real enthusiasts don't care about price. They buy what's right. Go race another american car!

The Z06 is quite a car, much respect is given to that by the pros. It has a greta racing legacy though somewhat more of a Bronx fashion statement.
Porsche offers more art, luxury and refinement...like no cheap plastic interiors, more precise control. Now add 500hp to that and you have a complete package.
What I really want is an Ariel Atom though....

I wouldn't take a Z06 over this of course ,but it would be idiotic not to take a Ford GT over GT2.Ford GT is a real dream car.And I am from Europe.

I think you should be careful what you wish for. The Ford GT is a great car in a straight line, but its not that great a track car. First, its very unreliable (take it from someone that has seen them/ driven against them on a track, second, they are absolutly terrible on gas, especially on the track. I really wanted to like this car, but it was built to be a garage queen... Take the GT2, thats a track car, right out of the box... if you have what it takes.

If you own any form of super car or performance car, gas efficiency is the last of your concerns. The fact you make such an argument is pointless.
Next point, not everyone wants a track car, granted the GT2 is such a track car people will group them together based on power and price.

An absolute animal of a car. I can't imagine what someone like RUF or 9ff will do with one of those.

The GT-2 (& GT-3) is what the name of Porsche is supposed to be about.
The 996 GT-2 is sucess, only the factory was/is afraid to race it and strongly discouraged anyone from doing so. WHY?
Wouldn't us Turbo drivers pay to see a street GT-2 car wipe the road clean from all comers. Kind of like Alois Ruf did with the ctr, "Yellow Bird" 20 years ago?
The 997 GT-2 images look great! Almost as good as the 993GT-2! Lets hope it comes to the road and to the track!
Godspeed

I have to add my comments to this as i recently owned a 996 GT2. The Z06 is about on a par in terms of straight line until it hit top gear, then the acceleration drops of dramatically compared to the porky, due to taller gearing.Laps time will be better on the GT2 as its substantially up on the turbo. Now i see the new GT2 is 0-100 mph in 7.4 secs, so i dont think a Z06 is going to beat it being realistic, straight line or track. Of course you have t pay for it but dont suggest it will get blown by the vett as its clearly wont.
