Spy Shots: 2008 Dodge Viper
This spy shot, posted Friday by Winding Road, appears to show a powertrain test mule for the '08 Viper. (More photos here.)The massive hood vents add fuel to the speculation that the fourth-generation snake will get a serious horsepower boost, possibly with help from the clever chaps at McLaren Performance Technologies. Allpar.com points to the McLarenized V10 Viper shown at this year's Detroit Auto Show, and rated at a stout 615 hp, as an indication of what's to come, with a likely target of 650 hp for the 2008 car.
No wonder the Corvette gang are working on the "Blue Devil"...

And it still manages to look like a clown's shoe.

Hokie smokes people are going to be killing themselves left right and center with that baby, 505 was bad enough Vipers are one of the most wrecked exotics around (per unit sold).

I hope it comes with a week or two of required driving school. I love speed but that just sounds excessive, where in the hell in the U.S. except for a track could you hope to exercise half that power?

Yeah, it looks like an intrepid/concorde with stick on hood scoops,

This is clearly a powertain mule and does not represent the final design of the 2008 Viper.

Is it just me, or is it looking more Corvette-ish and less Viper-ish?

Wow, that's a lot of power. Now maybe the viper-owning crybabies will stop complaining about the Z06 that will go 1320' quicker. I think the viper has more than enough power as it is, you think maybe they'd look for some better chassis development, or 'add lightness' instead of just throwing more power in it. Maybe that's not what the buyers are looking for. Meh.

The new Viper still doesn't look as good as the original. The flatter front does - as view point #1 said rightly - look like a clown's shoe.

Corvette looks like the Viper however that will cahnge for the 2008 model. The imitation is gone for GM to duplicate on the next round.
The output is over 650 to 700 range and I already informed the blog site.

Here is another article with even more photos of the new Viper:

This is going to be one hot car - too much car for me to manage, but can't wait to see it perform.

hopefully they will make the coupe first this time and then release the slower convertable later. everyone with half a brain knows this is the way to go.

Will it have all wheel drive?
Traction control?
Vehicle Stability assist?
Nah. just stuff a big-ass V10 in it.

in some ways, the viper is a very bad thing. the v10 is an unmanageable lump that will never be as easy to build around as a tiny (externally) SBC. I would LOVE for the next viper version to be a viper "RS", which ditches the v10 and replaces it with a 6.1L or bigger (think 392) HEMI. Think of it. It'd only be a little down on hp, but it sounds better, gets better mileage, would fit further back in the chassis, probably would be easier to cool and route exhaust plumbing from, perhaps lessening viper's crazy heat-soak issues....I just hope the people who need to be able to send it to Hennessey in Texas so they can have the full 1000hp can get over themselves enough that the viper actually develops into a decent all-round sports car someday. It's been knocking on the door of respectability since it was introduced. I'd like to see it dialed back a bit for some credibility. I hate the way the ever-increasing hp numbers seem to be our primary way of competing. Wouldn't we all love to see a build-quality war? wouldn't that be fun? I bet if the firepower ever happened, there'd be a v8 viper soon enough. hemi is a better marketing tool than SRT or v10 ever was

I tell you 600+ HP would sure be a show stopper - and it would not matter if it just spun the tires all day.

traction control is for pussies, i hope it has 800hp and wipes out a species of butterfly everytime you turn it on. viper isnt about lap times or comfort or anything as lame as that, its like a monster truck or a thunder boat or the space shuttle,

HemiDakota,
Sorry the imitation is on the part of Dodge, look at the earlier Viper body styles and then the latter styles AFTER the C5 (Vette). You'll notice they are VERY different... Dodge caught a lot of heat on that because they took away all the sexy curves of the Viper.

Didn't a lot of the engineers that worked on the original Viper end up working for GM and Ford? The Corette and GT to name of few. When it comes to styling, its usually dictated by performance. The Corvette, Viper and Ferrari 360 what-ever look very similar dont they?
I do prefer the second generation Vipers because they are oh so sexy. Viper is a super muscle car. The key word is Muscle.
