Mercedes-Benz is hard at work on testing the next generation of the GLE, and we have a new set of spy photos for the upcoming entry in the luxury SUV segment.
This appears to the same as the heavily-camouflaged
prototype we saw before, but the new photos are clearer and show us more of the GLE’s profile. Despite being heavily disguised, it’s clear to see how the upcoming
GLE, which is expected to be known internally as the “W167,” is smaller and rounder than the current W166. The prototype appears to borrow some styling cues from the smaller
Mercedes-Benz GLC, while having a more rugged look with wider wheel arches.
The current GLE was introduced as a 2016 model year, but still retains the same underpinnings as the ones found on the
2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class. With new competition from Jaguar, Porsche, and Maserati, the next-gen GLE will receive a major update on the outside and inside. A longer wheelbase would result in more interior space, and we expect and interior redesign similar to the new E-class – in other words, far more luxurious and modern.
As far as powertrains go, we expect the GLE to borrow new
Mercedes-Benz E-Class. That probably means two versions of the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and a high-performance one featuring a twin-turbo V8. A plug-in hybrid will be offered, as well, and we could even see the four cylinder from the E300 sedan. The engines should be matched to Mercedes-Benz’s nine-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel-drive coming as standard. With Mercedes-Benz continuing its SUV craze, a new
GLE Coupe would follow shortly after the completely redesigned GLE.
