Racing is a brilliant sport, but a dangerous one, and unfortunately tragedy can strike at any time. Last night, just such a tragedy occurred when the racing world lost driver Bryan Clauson at only 27 years old.

Clauson sustained fatal injuries while racing at the Belleville Nationals midget race in Belleville, Kansas on Saturday. According to the midget and sprint car racing sanctioning body United States Auto Club, Clauson was leading and about to overtake a backmarker when both cars touched sending, Clauson’s car flipping and eventually sliding down the banked track. After the initial flips, Clauson was hit again when driver Ryan Greth collided with his car. Clauson was then flown to Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska to treat his injuries. Sadly, he passed away from the injuries at the hospital with his family present.

Clauson leaves behind his parents, sister and fiancée, as well as a promising racing career. He had multiple championships in sprint car and midget racing, and just had his best Indianapolis 500 finish this past May. Our condolences go out to the entire Clauson family in this heartbreaking time.
