The X Gran Equator Concept is an adventure in itself
Genesis has just revealed its X Gran Equator SUV Concept that blends off-road capability with refined modern luxury, and I was fortunate enough to see the model in person during its unveiling at Genesis House in New York. The brand is also featuring the X Gran Equator Concept at the New York International Auto Show, but Genesis House will host the SUV, which is labeled the automaker’s first adventure vehicle concept, through the end of July.
While we don’t know how much the production X Gran Equator will retain from its initial design or whether it’ll even make it to production, one thing is certain: Genesis is on a roll with its recent concepts. On April 3, the automaker wowed audiences with its X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts based on its full-size G90 sedan at the Seoul Mobility Show in Goyang, Korea. The X Gran Equator’s creativity in the SUV segment further reflects Genesis’s ability to produce fascinating and dynamic concepts that resonate with viewers.
A polarizing, yet unique design
The X Gran Equator’s elongated hood may appear a bit awkward in some of the vehicle’s promotional photos, but in person, the design feels natural and is complemented by wraparound two-line headlamps. Genesis hasn’t confirmed whether the wraparound headlamps would display turn signals on the SUV’s sides, but such an addition would enhance the exterior’s versatility. One of the exterior’s most visually striking elements, besides its clean two-line headlights and taillights, is its massive 24” wheels surrounded by dark arch cladding. Geometric auxiliary lamps, whether you’re into them or not, further distinguish this concept.
Genesis unfolded the X Gran Equator’s split-open tailgate to showcase two seats on the tailgate’s lower portion that would be ideal for camping or hanging out pre-game. Instead of a single large horizontal or vertical touch display, this concept’s dash contains four analog-style gauges with digitally displayed data. It’s likely that Genesis would swap these gauges for a more traditional display in a production version. Still, the concept’s design choice was a refreshing departure from today’s cabins, which are often overrun with touchscreens.
The upholstery could be described as exquisite with its cross-stitched pattern, and there appears to be no shortage of interior storage solutions. This description is often overused in the driving world, but the cabin contains an airy feel thanks to touches like four individual sunroof panels. The headliner surrounding these panels also features the seats’ cross-stitch pattern for more design congruence. A release from Genesis notes that the concept’s model name “draws inspiration from ‘Equator,’ recognized as the ‘finest stallion’ in the world of Arabian horses—a symbol of endurance, agility and refined power.”

Final thoughts
From a personal standpoint, the X Gran Equator Concept made me excited to get behind its wheel and explore the outdoors in style. This SUV also reflects Genesis’s self-described expansion into lifestyle-oriented models offering versatile sophistication. While the X Gran Equator Concept feels futuristic, Genesis balances this approach with familiar features such as analog architecture and practical integrated roof rails. Ultimately, the X Gran Equator is a calculated risk that pays off on several fronts and we can’t wait to see it in action.
