Although the concept was diesel-fueled, it appears that Chevy is readying a gasoline variant.

Chevrolet is definitely building a Colorado ZR2. We
saw a concept nearly two years ago at the Los Angeles Auto Show. We’ve seen prototypes running around the desert. Until now, it wasn’t clear which engine Chevrolet was sticking under the hood. It’s apparent from these spy shots that at least one version of the Colorado ZR2 will be powered by a gasoline engine.

That’s not to say that there won’t be a diesel variant. The LA concept was used the 2.8-liter Duramax diesel, so there’s still a good chance that there will be an oil burning option. The gasoline engine should help keep the cost down, as the diesel engine is a nearly $4,000 option on the standard truck.

Other than the gasoline aspect, these new photos offer no other revelations. In fact, t
his appears to be the same truck we spied testing last month. The Colorado ZR2 will be an off-road-ready iteration of Chevy’s midsize truck. Expect beefed-up components under the skin and a more aggressive front bumper under that camouflage. Also expect it to do battle with the
Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which should present some serious competition. Chevrolet should reveal the full-production version this fall.
