A motorist in England caught a shocking bit of distracted driving on camera after he saw a fellow driver solving a Rubik’s Cube puzzle behind the wheel. According to the
Daily Mail, Macauley Stephens was traveling along the M61 motorway near Manchester at rush hour when he noticed another driver acting strangely behind the wheel. He quickly realized that the woman behind the wheel was studiously working to solve a Rubik’s cube instead of paying attention to rush hour traffic.
“When I spotted the woman I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was shocked more than anything,” Stephens told the
Mail. “How she could concentrate while driving on a busy motorway at peak time beggars belief.”
Stephens pulled out his phone and began filming the woman while she cruised along the highway working on her puzzle, blissfully unaware that she was being filmed. Eventually, she looked up noticed Stephens watching her. That didn’t stop her, however, and she kept on with her puzzle for several miles.
“She saw me looking at her, as you can see in the clip, and she wasn’t even affected at all. She just carried on for several more miles doing the puzzle.”
Stephens told the Daily Mail that he tweeted the video to the police, but hasn’t received a response yet.
The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture
Ernő Rubik. Although it peaked in popularity in the 80s–spawning, among other things, a Saturday morning
cartoon series–the puzzle is still popular. An organization called The
World Cube Association, which is the world Rubik’s Cube governing organization, runs cube solving competitions all over the world.
