It was announced this morning that BMW and Sauber had some important news. That news is that
BMW is going to purchase the F1 team Sauber.
With the BMW/Williams relationship falling apart, Team Williams is now on a sticky wicket. Williams may continue to
source engines from BMW, or they may go with another engine maker. Neither option is as desirable as their previous
deal with BMW. With many engine makers also operating their own race teams, the dependency on a competitor for engines
is less than ideal.
BMW’s move clearly signals the continued dominance of factory backed teams and BMW’s commitment to the sport. It will
also make it more difficult for non-factory teams to compete with factory backed efforts, both on the track and in the
race for talented drivers.
