Fall weather can be all over the place. One day it’s sunny and 65 degrees, and the next you’re dealing with wind, rain, and temperatures barely above freezing. Having a lightweight rain jacket around makes those unpredictable days a little easier, especially if you spend much time outdoors. Whether you’re walking the dog, heading out for a hike, or just trying to stay dry while running errands, it’s nice to have something you can throw on without feeling weighed down. And as winter gets closer, a lighter jacket can still come in handy over a fleece or sweatshirt when you need an extra layer against the wind.

Right now, the Free Country Hydro Light Status Rain Jacket is on sale at REI for $50, down from its usual $100 price. That’s half-off a lightweight men’s jacket available in five colors: electric blue, coal, olive, autumn, and black. It has a hip-length fit and weighs about a pound, making it easy to pack for a weekend trip or keep in the car when the forecast looks questionable. The polyester fabric also has four-way stretch, so you shouldn’t feel too restricted when moving around or layering underneath.

Pros

  • Lightweight, unlined design works well for layering
  • Windproof fabric helps block chilly fall breezes
  • Four-way stretch allows more freedom of movement
  • Adjustable hood and cuffs help improve coverage

Cons

  • Unsealed seams mean the jacket isn’t fully waterproof
  • Not ideal for extended exposure to heavy rain
  • No insulation for cold winter temperatures

There are a few nice details here, including an adjustable hood, elastic cuffs, and a storm flap over the front zipper to help keep wind and rain out. You also get two zippered hand pockets and a zippered chest pocket for keeping smaller belongings secure. One thing worth knowing is that the seams aren’t sealed, so despite the water-resistant design, this isn’t a fully waterproof shell.

It should be useful for light rain and everyday fall weather, but prolonged downpours could eventually soak through. There’s no insulation, either, so you’ll want something warmer underneath when temperatures really drop. For $50, though, it’s a decent everyday jacket to have on hand through fall and into early winter.

“The value for this rain jacket is hard to beat,” raved one satisfied wearer. “It’s lightweight and does really well against the rain.”

Another buyer said, “It fits perfectly and is great at keeping the rain off. It is made with lightweight, but sturdy material and is stylish.”
