Overview
The 2026 BMW 8 Series luxury Coupe and Convertible grand tourers have reached the end of the line, and although BMW is fielding a 2026 model year, they have already disappeared from BMW USA’s website, so we presume you rely on available inventory if you still want one. The regular 8 Series lineup (we review the M8 separately) comprises six-cylinder (335-horsepower 3.0L turbo 840i) and V8 (523-hp 4.4L twin-turbo M850i) models in both body styles, with an 8-speed automatic, launch control, and paddle shifters standard. The M850i can blast to 60 mph in as little as 3.6 seconds. All feature xDrive AWD, except for the base RWD 840i models. It’s well-equipped too, with Merino leather, a head-up display, heated front seats, a premium audio system, and adaptive LED headlights.
What’s New for 2026?
The 2026 8 Series is an unchanged run-out model, but there is an M850i Edition M Heritage edition in Coupe or Convertible this year to serve as an 8 Series swanson. On the outside, it has M tri-color accent stripes, the M Sport Professional package, M Shadowline lights, Extended Shadowline trim, an M carbon roof (coupe), and M Sport brakes with black callipers. It’s available in five historic BMW Individual paint colors from the E31 8 Series: Mauritius Blue metallic, Bright Red, Oxford Green metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, and Daytona Violet metallic.
Inside, you’ll find M Sport front seats, Merino leather/Alcantara upholstery, M tri-color stitching, M badges, a matte-carbon-fiber console, a glass shifter and iDrive controller, limited-edition plaques, the Driving Assistance Professional package, and a 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkens audio system. The 2026 BMW 8 Series’ price stays much the same as last year.
Exterior
The 8 Series is low and wide, as a grand GT should be, with the Coupe’s falling roofline severely restricting rear headroom. The Coupe comes with a finely integrated power soft top. The reassuringly traditionally styled kidney grille is wide and illuminated at night, flanked by Icon Adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight. The 840i features 19-inch wheels, while the M850i rides on staggered 20-inch M wheels and also has a more aggressive bumper.

Interior
The cabin gives away its age with its older iDrive 7 infotainment system and two separate 12.3-inch digital displays for the gauge cluster and touchscreen, but premium Harman Kardon audio and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Bowers & Wilkens Diamond Surround audio is optional.
The seats are covered in Merino leather, the steering wheel and power front seats are heated, and the Convertible has neck warmers for winter driving. The small rear seats have less than 30 inches of legroom and only 34 inches of headroom, making them suitable for children only. The coupe’s trunk space is a generous 14.8 cu-ft, with the Convertible offering 12.4 cu-ft.

For its last model year, we say go all-in, despite the fuel-consumption penalty. We love the M850i xDrive Coupe for its near-200-hp power advantage, adaptive M hardware, V8 soundtrack, and AWD.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- 523-hp V8 in M850i delivers effortless grand touring power
- Exceptionally well-equipped at base price
- Comfortable ride with capable handling balance
- Standard Laserlight headlights and head-up display
- Premium interior materials throughout
Cons:
- Rear seats are cramped, with only 29.5 inches of legroom
- Interior tech feels dated compared to newer BMWs
- M850i returns just 19 MPG combined on premium fuel
- Convertible trunk shrinks significantly with top down
- No major updates since 2019 introduction
Verdict
The BMW 8 Series is getting old, but it’s still a polished GT with a fine blend of performance and luxury, and most people will find the 840i great for daily driving. The M850i’s 523-hp V8 moves performance and excitement to the next level, though, and the Adaptive M Suspension keeps it comfortable and composed. The Convertible adds al-fresco driving for about $10K more, and both are perfect for refined long-distance touring.
