Earlier this week, we heard that Mercedes-Benz will be introducing its nine-speed automatic transmission in Europe, but while this 9G-Tronic will first launch over there in the E-Class, we'll get our first crack at this gearbox in the 2015 CLS-Class. According to Edmunds, the nine-speed CLS will go on sale in the US next fall before eventually spreading to almost all other Mercedes models, but there is no word as to when this would occur.

The current CLS uses a seven-speed automatic, and the 9G-Tronic's extra gears will help improve fuel economy. Looking ahead, Mercedes said in a press release that this transmission is suitable for use in a broad range of models, both rear- and all-wheel drive and even hybrid and plug-in vehicles.

      I wasn't aware there were this many engineers trolling AB :rollseyes: 9 speeds doesn't mean 9 continuously shifting gears. Modern transmissions have sophisticated programming when compared to a traditional automatic. Modern transmissions chooses the appropriate gear for both up shifts and down shifts with no set pattern like in the old days where a typical 4 speed would go 1,2,3,4...3,4...2,3,4... and so forth. Even though the transmission has 9 speeds to choose from, rarely (if ever, depending on the programming) will the transmission actually use them all in order.

      I don't see how much further increasing gear counts on automatics would contribute to either better acceleration or fuel economy. Pretty sure modern engines have a wide enough powerband to have the right amount of torque and efficiency over several thousand rpm, you dont need eleventy million gears to stay in a tiny rev range like a big rig. And more gears=bigger, heavier transmissions, more frictional losses maybe, more time spent cog swapping thus less smooth acceleration (seriously, would you like to hear and feel your car juggling so many gears just pulling away from a stoplight?). How much fuel could possibly be saved cruising on the highway in quintuple overdrive versus triple overdrive? Reducing internal frictional losses, speeding up gearchange times, keeping roughly the same gear ratio spread and better computer management of the shifting would save as much if not more fuel on the EPA test cycles, and a good driver would probably still beat that with a manual in the real world.

        Adding a gear to an AT is not like adding one to an MT. The design of the AT makes it pretty easy to start adding more gears without changing the size of the transmission.

      It's a simple regulatory requirement. More and more countries will enforce fleet-average mpg standards, so manufacturers have to optimize mpg no matter what. Thank governments for turbos vs naturally aspirated and for the gear-number horse-race.

      Once you have this many gears, paddles become pretty useless. There are just too many gears to bother trying to shift yourself.

      At some point the car will be constantly changing gears - or they add a reduced gearchange button. 9 or 10, I think it's about enough. I could be wrong though.

        DCTs don't have the shift quality and feel desired by most MB customers. They have their place, but in a Benz ain't it.
