Our enthusiast's Spidey Sense started tingling when we heard about the newest bit of technology employed on the enhanced <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/yaris/">2012 Toyota Yaris</a>. It was not a more advanced variable valve timing system; the Yaris' 1.5-liter engine is carried over and already has an intake cam with adjustable phasing. It was not more cogs gracing a more advanced transmission; the Yaris makes do with a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual. The suspension is also traditional with struts up front and torsion beam in the rear.<br />
<br />
So what was the next great thing?<br />
<br />
A mono-arm windshield wiper with washer jets aimed to either side of the big blade. Ah, our Spidie Sense was trying to warn us of an exceptionally dull car. In this world where small, inexpensive cars are becoming more fun - <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mazda/mazda2">Mazda2</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/fiat/500">Fiat 500</a> anyone - the new Yaris is a yawner.<br />
<br />
For normal consumers, however, the 2012 Yaris - available as the L, LE and SE - is a much improved, affordable and economical transportation appliance. Covering the automotive business is rife with surprises. Case in point: On a recent trip to the stunning Algarve region of Portugal to test Continental Tire's new ContiEcoContact 5 (verdict: they're very good), we had the chance to sample a bit of forbidden fruit.<br />
<br />
In the process of learning about the German company's doughnut-making capabilities (which included a journeyman's seminar on velocity-excited short- and long-chain polymers, the CEC5's three-percent fuel economy bump and improved wet-braking capabilities), one test car fitted with Continental's new rubber was a EU-spec 2011 Fiat 500 Abarth.<br />

The previous-generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/sebring">Chrysler Sebring Convertible</a> was a mainstay of vacation-destination rental fleets. The cars were so numerous that you could pick them out from your airplane flying into Orlando, Miami and Los Angeles.<br />
<br />
The old Sebring seemed just about perfect in this role. It was fine for a couple days of fun in the sun, but you never shed a tear when dropping off its keys back at the rental counter. When we arrived at the launch of the new Chrysler 200 Convertible in San Diego, we wondered whether the Sebring's successor would be better enough for us to want to hold onto the keys after our test drive was over.<br />

We usually see women behind the wheel of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/slk-class">Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class</a>. Who can blame them? It's a cute little car. The original SLK debuted in 1996 with a four-cylinder powerplant and all of 136 ponies. What it lacked in the motivation department it made up for with its Vario-roof retractable hardtop. Not since the 1957 Ford Skyliner could a car stop so much traffic while parked.<br />
<br />
The SLK gained some testosterone with its first facelift in 2000. While the exterior was still rather tame, the chick car jokes ceased in 2001 with the introduction of the 354-horsepower SLK 32 AMG.<br />
<br />
Things continued to get better with the all-new 2004 edition and its sleeker styling that paid homage to Mercedes' Formula One designs and the beastly McMerc SLR. The reality that AMG could stuff its hand-built 5.4-liter V8 under the hood made the second-generation SLK a serious performance car.<br />
<br />
For 2012, the SLK officially begins its third generation, and you can see the difference from 100 yards. Especially from the front view, the roadster looks more mature and substantial. The split-grill design reconstitutes the 190 SL's design from the late 1950s in a handsome, modern manner. The bolder aesthetics continue in the rear, which features large arches over the rear wheels and LED taillamps. And it keeps getting better on the inside...<br />

The German automaker recently broke the 100,000 unit sales mark in the States, with 2010 calendar year sales up 23 percent over 2009. If you've spent any time on German roads, one thing you'll notice - right after the speed limit signs with a slash mark through them - is that station wagons are popular.<br />

Nearly every manufacturer builds multiple models ranging from sub-compacts to near full-size behemoths. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/mercedes-benz/e-class">Mercedes-Benz E-Class</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/c-class">C-Class</a> wagons are everywhere. Ditto for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series">BMW 3</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/5+series">5 Series</a> Tourings. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/fiat">Fiat</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/citroen/">Citroen</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/seat/">Seat</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/skoda/">Skoda</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/peugeot/">Peugeot</a> all sell lots of wagons. Perhaps it's a legacy of the Lamborghini Espada or the undeniable fact that the current M-B E63 AMG wagon is seriously cool, Europeans like wagons.<br />

"We basically blew the old car up. The number of parts we carried over from the last car you can just about hold in your hands," said Mitch Clauw, Chief Engineer on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/300">2011 Chrysler 300</a>.<br />

He was responding to repeated questions about the new sedan. Was it all-new, or just a heavy refresh like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chrysler/200">200 Sedan</a>? You can't blame journalists for being confused. Chrysler's product onslaught is putting 16 all-new and significantly improved models on the road this year. But all-new is a very different thing from significantly improved.<br />

Clauw supported his answer, "Every exterior panel is new. Every piece in the interior is new. With the underbody, just a few pieces of the front floor pan are carry over. The front and rear aluminum suspension pieces and geometry are different. So is the steering. The V6 is all new. While the internals of the Hemi are carryover, the intake, exhaust and accessories are not." Okay, we believe him now, but you'd need really big hands to hold the carried-over five-speed automatic transmission.<br />

It's rare. It's fast. It's expensive. Meet the 2011 Porsche 911 Speedster. First shown in October at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/paris-motor-show/">Paris Auto Show</a>, the $204,400 humpbacked <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911">911</a> arrives at U.S. dealerships early next year. <br />
<br />
On paper, the rear-wheel-drive 911 Speedster appears to be a heavily optioned <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/15/paris-preview-2011-porsche-911-carrera-gts/">911 GTS Cabriolet</a>, albeit one with a bubbled tonneau cover. Having just driven the new GTS with the 408-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-six and Turbo-width rear track, we knew going into this drive that the uprated equipment makes a good foundation for the Speedster. Building on the GTS' enhanced mechanicals, the Speedster also gets the seven-speed PDK dual clutch, Sport Chrono Plus, Porsche Active Suspension Management and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. Take it or leave it, this is the only way the Speedster comes.<br />

But so much for on-paper specs. To find out what the 911 Speedster is like on the road, we headed to Palm Springs, California for a mid-winter desert blast.<br />

The needle is finally pointed in the right direction.<br />

The original 2007 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jeep/compass">Jeep Compass</a> was the first production Jeep that wasn't. Beyond its "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/jeep/">Jeep</a>" badge and trademark seven-bar grille, the Compass was a compact crossover derived from the front-wheel-drive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/caliber">Dodge Caliber</a>, a product that lacked the hardware and personality to provide the foundation for a genuine Jeep.<br />
<br />
Hampered by ungainly styling, modest power and no transfer case, the Compass never achieved much success on trails or in showrooms. Compass sales always lagged behind the Caliber and its closer platform relative, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/jeep/patriot">Jeep Patriot</a>. In short, the Compass didn't accomplish its mission of being an attractive entry-level Jeep for shoppers who aspired to own a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jeep/grand+cherokee">Grand Cherokee</a> but couldn't afford a real Jeep. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chrysler/">Chrysler</a> improved the Compass's interior for 2009, but given the national economic climate and the company's bankruptcy, it's likely that even more substantial product changes wouldn't have moved the sales needle. Things should be a bit different for the 2011 model year. <br />

There's a well-worn automotive axiom that plays out many different ways: The amount of money you spend is proportional to how fast you go. You want more speed? You spend more money.<br />

If you've priced a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/m3">BMW M3</a> these days, you see the principle at work. Back in the old days (1987), a U.S.-spec M3 boasted a 195-horsepower four-cylinder engine and did 0-60 miles per hour in about 6.7 seconds on its leisurely way to a 143-mph top speed - all for just over $30,000. Today, the least expensive 414-horsepower V8 M3 will set you back $58,400. As it should, the new M3 trounces the old in every conceivable performance metric with its 4.6-second 0-60 mph run, supercar mid-range and electronically-limited 155-mph top end.<br />

This reality left enthusiasts wishing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> would offer something a little less speedy for a commensurate drop in MSRP. "It is not possible," was the answer from Jens Schulenburg, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bugatti/">Bugatti</a> vehicle engineering chief. He was answering the question as to whether a standard <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/veyron">Veyron</a> could be modified to be as fast as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/04/bugatti-veyron-16-4-super-sport-sets-land-speed-record-at-267-81/">2011 Super Sport edition</a>. "It is like a domino effect," he explained, "To get more horsepower, you need more cooling. To get more cooling, you need more airflow through more and bigger radiators. To accomplish this, you need to redesign the front end. When you do that, you change the aerodynamic balance of the car at speed. To rebalance the car, you need to change the roof and rear fascia." Schulenburg could have kept going. For an hour.<br />

We got the picture: The $2.58 million Super Sport is not a standard Veyron with a chip. Shame on you for even thinking that. Consider the Super Sport a Veyron 2.0 release; a significant re-engineering of the 1001-horsepower, sixteen-cylinder, quad-turbo, all-wheel-drive supercar.<br />

But given the Veyron's sales success - they've sold approximately 260 since the vehicle's debut in 2005 - why go to all the trouble for a maximum of 40 cars? (Bugatti will cease Veyron coupe production at 300 units.) "Current Veyron owners wanted a more dynamic, exciting driving experience," said Julius Kruta, Bugatti's Head of Tradition. "Most of the orders booked for the Super Sport are from current Veyron owners. They asked us for a car that felt more extreme." Is that even possible? We flew to Spain to find out.<br />

Geologically speaking, dinosaurs ruled the earth for a brief period. In automotive terms, the same holds true for the traditional sport utility vehicle. But while dinosaurs will never return, SUVs are attempting a comeback.<br />

Autoblog readers all know the history of the American SUV; it started with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/suburban">Suburban</a> in 1936 when <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> dropped a station wagon body over a truck chassis. Natural selection favored utilitarian characteristics, so the Suburban grew. Other forces were active in the land of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/jeep/">Jeep</a>. Their Wagoneer (1963) survived for decades thanks to genes that combined plushness with off-road capabilities. Another variation on the SUV was the unibody Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984), a new phylum that somehow mutated from body-on-frame parents.<br />
<br />
Environmental influencers such as cheap gas and low lease rates caused an SUV Cambrian Explosion throughout the 1980s and 90s. Spontaneous parallel genesis occurred at other manufacturers yielding dozens of Darwinian finch-like variations. Then disaster struck. The entire range of SUVs nearly went extinct with the meteoric impact of 2008's financial collapse and a spike in fuel prices. Bo and Luke have matured a bit since <em>The Dukes of Hazzard</em> went off the air in 1985. The pair drove, crashed and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/11/11/on-this-day-in-history-general-lee-makes-iconic-jump-w-video/">flew plenty of Rebel-flagged Chargers</a> in their day. Having matured past these antics, both men would likely appreciate the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/dodge/charger">2011 Dodge Charger</a>. Certainly, the sedan's styling more closely matches the second-generation Mopar they're known for hotfooting, and the significantly improved interior would also likely satisfy their more refined backsides.<br />
<br />
We knew what to expect when we saw the new Charger earlier this month. We were part of a small group of journalists granted a sneak peak at an early styling study of the rear-wheel drive sedan way back in December of 2008. But at the time - given Chrysler's dire condition and the tanking economy - we had our doubts if the lights would remain on in Auburn Hills long enough for the new Charger make it to market.<br />
<br />
The good news is that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/11/08/chrysler-reports-239-million-operating-profit-for-q3/"> Chrysler is alive and at least somewhat well</a>, and that the new Charger eclipses the outgoing model in major ways. Thanks to years of dedicated work and impressive engineering, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/infiniti/">Infiniti</a> has earned a reputation for being the "Japanese <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a>." Like the German automaker, Infiniti's U.S. entries are decidedly more performance oriented, but the brand's decision to install the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter V6 in its G Sedan had us wondering if things were changing... and not for the better.<br />

Our waiting Infiniti IPL G Coupe idles curbside. Exiting its enormous Thermos-sized chrome exhaust tips, the invisible waveforms invite a closer listen. The baritone note suggests power, with a cadence that is is lumpy, sounding closer to a V8 with a heavy cam than any V6 we've ever heard. A harbinger of things to come, or just an evil audible tease? We had flown to California's Napa Valley to find out, but first we needed some context.<br />

With California's Death Valley conveniently located on the same continent as Dearborn, Michigan, why on earth would <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> ship engineers and the all-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/explorer">2011 Explorer</a> all the way to the United Arab Emirates to conduct hot-weather and off-road testing? Especially on a crossover, a vehicle few people will ever drive off-road? <br />
<br />
The value of this 14,000-mile round trip became abundantly clear as I stepped out of the civilized, air-conditioned comfort of my shuttle vehicle, an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/raptor">F-150 SVT Raptor</a>.<br />
<br />
The air in Dubai hits you like an atomic hair dryer. Unlike the heat in Death Valley, there's some serious humidity hanging in the atmosphere due to the UAE's proximity to the Gulf of Oman. Our day in the desert saw temperatures of 48&deg; Celsius (118&deg; Fahrenheit) with humidity in the range of 40-60 percent. That's not a dry heat. Using a standard heat index calculator with a 50-percent humidity factor, the equivalent temperature showed 191&deg; Fahrenheit.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Alpina/">Alpina</a> is as familiar to German enthusiasts as Shelby, Hurst, Saleen and Yenko are to American gearheads. And like its American counterparts, Alpina has made a business out of taking the best vehicles from one marque and making them substantially better than anything rolling off the assembly line.<br />
<br />
The relationship between <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> and Alpina started in 1962 when a German enthusiast named Burkard Bovenseipen realized his BMW 1500 had plenty of untapped potential. Bovenseipen developed a dual carburetor kit for the 1500's four-cylinder, and as the carbs flew off the shelves, he realized there was a serious market for BMW-based performance parts. Mr. B formed ALPINA Burkard Bovenseipen KG in 1964 and in the decades since, the company has become known simply as Alpina.<br />
<br />
But while the name has changed, its mission remains the same, and its line of upgrades have grown considerably since its inception. Bovenseipen's team continues to recognize the potential in almost every new BMW product, and the small but competent company, now managed by Bovenseipen's son Andreas (his staff calls him Andy), delivers better, less compromised, higher-performance versions of BMW production cars.<br />

In Europe, Alpina offers variants of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/3+series">3 Series</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/5+series">5 Series</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/6+series">6 Series</a>, dubbed the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/09/geneva-motor-show-alpina-b3-brings-the-twist/">B3</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/17/alpina-teases-bmw-b5-bi-turbo-ahead-of-goodwood-debut/">B5</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/05/geneva-2009-bmw-alpina-b6-gt3-puts-the-ring-on-notice/">B6</a>, respectively. However, production constraints (and some concerns about M cannibalization, we're sure) prevents sales of these hotted-up Bimmers in the States. That's a crime, because the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/08/chicago-preview-bmw-brings-back-the-alpina-b7-for-2011/">Alpina B7</a> - the only Alpina available in the U.S. - is easily the best <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/bmw/7+series">7 Series</a> we've driven.<br />
