2011 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mission: Impossible 4 was filming in Mumbai, India with a rolling example of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics/i8 concept on hand and ready for its closeup. The VED was accompanied by a 2011 BMW 6 Series during a scene in which the cars negotiate Mumbai's traffic-clogged streets.

Though there's still little indication of when the proposed 328-horsepower, three-cylinder diesel hybrid sports car will show up, this version looks mighty similar to the one caught lapping in Abu Dhabi last year. BMW's plans for the car are still generally under wraps, but it's likely the production version will break cover wearing the i8 badge. Thanks for the tip, Zohaib!

I don't think it's pretty per se, but I am impressed that tech aside, BMW has the balls to put a car into production that actually looks like a car from the 21st century. Most cars on the market today don't look that much more advanced than cars from 20 years ago. This thing looks like the future, and a bit like the Volt.

don't get your hopes too high, this car is too impractical to make it a production car. probably only the engine(s) will make it.

I love 3 cylinder cars, diesel cars, hybrid cars. Guess I'll have to start liking BMW's.

I wouldn't want people on the outside of my car to see how fat I am.

Weird that they'd put a non-production car in a movie. And it's clearly non-production, as even ignoring the doors that'd never fly in the US you've got such little room in those wheel wells that a minor bump would send the tires through the body. Still, unlike most cars it looks absolutely nothing like anything on the road and would be guaranteed to turn heads far more than any current Ferrari. I'm not saying those heads are turning for the same reasons as a Ferrari, just that more of them are.

Is it really that weird? This is a spy movie at all, since when is most of the tech they show off in those movies actually real.

Yeah, it's weird. Companies usually want to show off cars that people can buy. Sure, there's a halo effect, but primarily you want to use the movie as advertising for something specific.

I agree. It's really weird/odd. James Bond movies are not Sci-Fi and this car's design says just that, Sci-Fi. The problem is, this is a futuristic design but the movie series is anything but. No doubt this car would be a head turner anywhere it goes because the design is so far from the norm. I know I would be one of many persons turning my head and saying, 'Whose crazy enough to drive that?' To repeat what others have said, this car would never make it to production, maybe just the engine.

Oops I said James Bond, mention Mission Impossible. But the movies are not that far off. Where's the 'Edit' button? :(

Friends from Germany say that they are proud of this car. It's gonna be an icon of German engineering. The hottest car ever!

the clear door idea is so 1990s. That was the hot thing with design students back then

I love the clear doors from the concept but it remains dubious if they wil make it into the real world. The design ethos of this car is amazing and I hope it shapes the future of BMW further from Chris Bangle's illustrious designs.

Not even unique. Bertone did it in 1969 with the Lamborghini Marzal concept, which blows this away.

clear door? lolz. nope. it is great on the show stage. but i don't want other people to see what pants i wear, or how messy my cabin is. or where i put my wallet. it is like transparent house. great in concept, but no one would want live in it.

Interesting...it's a violently ugly design, esp. from behind, IMO. I'd expect to see it in sci-fi movie like the Audi in I Robot or Lexus in Minority Report, though, rather than in a (presumably) present-day spy flick...
