2012 Volkswagen New Beetle – Click above for more high-res spy shots

Honestly Volkswagen? Why even bother with camo? If you're going to parade the 2012 Beetle out in the open – with it's chopped roofline and redesigned rump – is a little bit of paint-matching trim around the headlamps really worth the effort? And while we're at it, the bright silver paint isn't doing your clandestine efforts any favors, either.

Unlike the shots our spies snagged late last year, this newest batch shows a near production-ready Beetle, complete with a reworked fascia, more deeply drawn headlamps and some attractive contouring around the greenhouse. The new chiseled sides, thickened C-pillar and higher hatch do their best to modernize an aging design, as will the underpinnings: all the good bits from the Golf VI platform combined with V-Dub's 2.5-liter inline-five in the base models and something turbocharged further up the food chain. Expect more details to surface over the next few months, with a possible debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Volkswagan took the beetleness out of this redesigned vehicle. I think it's going to be a flop.

Just because you don't like the car, doesn't mean other people don't. I'm sure many people think the car you drive/like is hideous. There's nothing wrong with the new beetle. It's actually pretty attractive. It's not amazingly cute, but it's not that bad either.

This still isn't the car un masked. It's just a mocked up silver one, just like the black one that was caught a few months back. That's still the out going New Beetle's front and rear fascias grafted on.

Looks like almost the same car as the black beetle that was spied a couple times before. Looks like the front and rear have covers on it, but VW did a good job painting the covers the same color to throw off everyone. Not sure about that roof, still looks like they put a fake roof over it.

It looks like a shoe, and I'm sure everyone involved with the original Beetle is spinning in their grave. Why can't we have practical cars anymore?

A car only a clown could love.

I kinda like it. It's like a tall Audi TT or Porsche 911. Definitely more masculine than the last Beetle, so I would be willing to drive something like this. But it would have to come with the turbo-diesel to grab my interest.

Some people may like this, but truly it's an abomination! The Beetle is the Beetle for a reason; it's shape. Yes it was primarily thought of as a girly car, but so what! my husband drives mine knowing the 26 mpg in towm beats his 14~ The reason I bought my Beetle was it's shape, it's what sets the Beetle apart from all other cars, now VW wants to take that away and make it look like everything else. I ask is that really a good idea?

I'm beginning to think Audi is deliberately trying to kill the VW brand. *Everything* they've designed in the past year or so is *absolutely* horrible! Seriously, what has happened to VW? They used to create some of the coolest, most funky, and or inspiring designs. Not to mention, their build and material quality in recent years has become *absolute shyte*! It's sad. ...Sad indeed.

      *sigh* ...hangs head.

If this is will have an option for any displacement of VR6 I actually want it (I know it's probably not gonna happen), the thought of a new Beetle that hauls ass and sounds like sex is strangely attractive to me
