Shifter karts at Laguna Seca – Click above to watch video after the jump

Few forms of motorsport offer up a more pure driving experience than going tire to tire in a shifter kart. Likewise, of the many storied and excellent tracks of the world, Laguna Seca holds a special place in the the hearts and minds of racers of all stripes. Combine the two for the first time and you've got a recipe for unbridled awesome. Laguna Seca had been off limits to 125cc shifters for some time due to pesky noise regulations, but with a new air box and a larger exhaust silencer, the pint-sized racers have only just managed to squeeze under the 92 dB rule.

To celebrate the occasion, one racer was kind enough to strap a camera to his machine before taking to the course. As a result, we can all tag along for the ride. If you're short on time and just want to see the shifters dance down the infamous Corkscrew, jump ahead to about 1:30 in. Hit the jump to see the full flick for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Jason!

awesome video and very fast lap time

~around 1 minute and 40 seconds for that lap

about 6 seconds slower then the lap record set by Viper ACR 1:34

but as fast as 997 gt3

It's still early - it's not like karts have had years to work on the track.

I can only imagine what it feels like to hit those rumble strips on a kart.
The strips at Laguna aren't that deep, so it's not bad at all when you run onto them.

Sorry, the race track has a 92db restriction on vehicles? Sorry am I am missing something?
It's something all California racers gripe about. Neighbors apparently complained enough to get restrictions put on the noise limit. Laguna was able to work into the deal a certain number of events that can be ran with the noise restrictions lifted, but unfortunately, our measly kart racing doesn't fall on one of those dates. Regardless, we simple had to change from a K&N style intake filter to an airbox and from the standard exhaust silencer (about 12" to a larger one that is about 18") and this gets us all well under 92dB.

You bought a house near a race tack, then you wonder why it is loud?
Somehow, the corckscrew doesn't look as scary in a kart as in a GT car.

        Or a motorcycle.

...not as butthurt as most Autoblog comments :-]

Cracked rips are the most common injury in karting from people either not using a rip protector or using one that just isn't adequate enough.
It should make your ribs hurt much more than your butt, trust me.

        Rib protector FTW.

That's just like the real thing in Gran Turismo...only windier!!

........betcha I can't drive it that good in GT either...especially not a cart. What a blast.

That is so much fun. I've had the privilege of taking a shifter car around an autox course a few times. Most fun Ive had. I cant imagine taking a cart around the Seca. Those things just point and shoot. Just dont apply brakes around corners.

Rossi and the boys raced shifters round Laguna a couple of seasons back, how did they get round the restrictions. Maybe its just that he is God and can do anything he wants!
There are a few events a year where the noise restrictions are lifted. For the big events, Indy cars, MotoGP, etc. When Rossi did the demo race it was during one of those weekends. To show how much of a badass Rossi is, he was racing virtually identical karts to the others in the group and I heard he won by something like a minute? Could be rumor, not sure. But he is exceptionally quick on 4 wheels as well as he proved when he tested F1 and immediately threw down some great laptimes.
