Autocar drives the Ariel Atom V8 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Ariel finally put together its long-awaited Atom V8 and handed to the keys to some lucky sonofa Autocar to take the eight-pot pocket rocket out for a spin. Matt Prior got some seat time in the light-weight sportscar and provides great insight into this new Atom. Phrases from Prior include; "fastest production car anyone has ever driven," "utterly brilliant" and "TEE HEE HEE."

There are a lot of stats to wrap your head around, but this one seems to sum up it up best: The V8 Atom produces 900 horsepower per ton. By comparison, the Bugatti Veyron produces around 530 horsepower per ton. There's more, but why spoil it when you can hop the jump and watch Prior's jealousy-inducing spin.

At the end he says, "I wasn't sure I was gonna like this car..."

How in the holy hell can you not think you're gonna like an Ariel Atom with a V8????

By fastest, I guess he means quickest?

I can't see how that car has enough grip for the additional HP to matter in 1st or 2nd gear.

We're told how powerful this car is, and it's terribly tractable and yet he rarely goes past half throttle and never seems to go past half revs. That means he likely never broke 300HP output, so why not just have the lower model?

It has traction and launch control. But you'd be mad to put your foot down in an Atom without some experience with the car. It is too bad that he did not get it up to redline at 10500 rpm. I was hoping to hear it there.

Atom 3 looks like a more affordable option to me, kind of!

I love how the AOL ad under articles that mention the Veyron bring it up as if anyone is seriously shopping for one on AOL autos.

      25 cars == production?

      Sweet car.

That was the best track they had to test the Atom V8?

I'm really thinking that 1:1 is the wave of the future. That would be insane in a street-driven vehicle. Jay Leno would do a really nice burnout in that one.

wow now thats a track car!

I'd love to see this go against an Xbow. That'd be some epic racing.

but at least you have the choice

The power to weight ratio is between Forumla 3 and slightly less than Formula 2. I dunno if the car wears street approved shoes, but with slicks and some serious aero research (I'm sure the firm has done quite a bit of aero testing but I doubt they have the budget F1 teams have) I'd love to see it's ring and Laguna Seca times. Infact, just run the car there 'as-is'. Jeez, what a beast, it's as raw and pure a driving experience outside of the F1 series one could ask for.

not... really. you'd barely ever be able to go 30% throttle. in.. like.. any gear.
the nurburgring or it isnt worth it. that being said, i would sell my testicles for this car. its completely insane.
