Volkswagen Up! spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Even though Volkswagen won't be offering a gasoline-powered version of its exclamatory little Up! city car here in the United States, we're still slated to get its E-Up! electric counterpart. Earlier reports stated that a larger version of the E-Up! could come Stateside as early as 2013, and we now have spy shots of a pair of Up! prototypes out testing in the Death Valley heat.

Our keen-eyed spy photographers pointed out that while these two prototypes appear to be very similar, the one with its grille closed off could actually be the all-electric E-Up! model. Thus, we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more spy shots of the VW prototypes as they go through their hot weather testing. For now, have a look at these initial spy shots for yourself in our high-res gallery below.

They went to the lowest point on land in North America to test the UP nice.

Came a long way from Bratislava, Slovakia, the largest per capita car manufacturer in the world :-)

I wont be surprised if VW utilized some Suzuki kei platform/innards in the Up!...word is VW bought a portion of Suzuki to its fold, in part to cut costs in making the Up!

Surely Wolfsburg has a higher ratio. It has a quarter the population and the largest car plant in the world.

Yes, a long way to provide us with the pun, "Make Up! Yours."

Sorry...Czechs have an insatiable hunger for wordplay. Slovaks...for car factories and slivovice. I'd say it's a dead heat.

Anyway... Porsche Cayenne, Kia C'eed, VW e-Up!... time to bring some Skodas.

Dressed in black in the middle of the summer in Death Valley... smart. Bet they took the sheet from their hotel bed to cover it during down time...

        It's wearing a turban.

It's done on purpose. Max stress on the car under brutal conditions: black car in desert.

Probably did not. To test the extreme, go to the extreme. So Death Valley at peak temps with a vehicle that absorbs the most heat. See how it does.

Am I the only one who is annoyed by the punctuation in the name?

why wouldn't they just bring over the Polo instead of the UP? ...Are there that many advantages to having the UP over the Polo? I know the UP is suppose to be electric, hybrid, or some electrical derivative of such. But why not just put the new electric-ish drivetrain in a Polo instead? I personally would be more inclined to drive something the size of the Polo than the UP.

Well, we're getting a larger version of the Up! anyway. I think a car this size is a good thing for the city, and is loads more practical than a Smart.
        I agree.
We are getting the Polo as well.

But thats not VW...if you look good on front guard it is SKODA...;)
