Mini Challenge crash in Australia – Click above to watch video after the jump

The red-and-white blur in the shot above is an upside-down Mini. The car, driven by Kain Magro in a Mini Challenge support race for a V8 Supercar round at Queensland Raceway in Australia, flipped over at high speed on the last lap of the race and cartwheeled numerous times through the sandtrap, over the fence and into the crowd.

Incredibly, no one was killed, and only two spectators and the driver were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Follow the jump to watch the accident. Thanks to everyone who sent a tip.

You have to admire the crashworthiness of a Mini Cooper...

      LETS MINI!!!

Yep, the laws of physics must be adhered to. It's easy to see how it started flipping once it hit the sand. Nothing showed how the car got upside down on the track in the first place - that's what I'd like to know. Its fortunate that the injuries were minimal, but it looked like the car traveled a long time (even on the full-speed footage) between leaving the track and crossing the fence, so maybe people actually were able to mostly get out of the way...

That's the one thing I find alarming about the Mini - it grips and grips and grips but damn when you hit the limit, you're gone. Laws of physics must be obeyed!

Insane. Lucky it was a Mini Challenge and not a Hummer challenge.

(turn 1 would be game over)

        Bullrun?

If it were a Hummer challenge, they'd all be pitting for fuel every lap.

Man that video looks much worse than the actual outcome... That fence is pretty useless in that situation... Maybe Nascar isn't a fan favorite among racing fans around the world, but they know how to keep they're cars on the track and away from the fans. Maybe some of these road course tracks should take a page outta Nascars safety book.

Justin, that Mini was headed straight for the fence.

If a NASCAR racer were to hit the fence, it would only be a minor swipe of the fence, very rarely, if ever, do NASCAR cars hit the fence head-on.

        That's not a road course.

but would it hurt if a NASCAR vehicle went out of control and creamed about half the audience... ?

      It can fly.

It's also crazy how the Mini flipped over - and never touched - the tire barrier.

Definitely a freak accident, especially considering the distances from the track to the tire barrier, and the tire barrier to the fence.

It is fortunate that it turned out the way it did.

Did anyone catch the part where it says "V8 SuperCar"??
Maybe you want to RTA from beginning to end first....
Yes, did you catch the words "in a Mini Challenge support race for..." immediately before that? Didn't think so.
Yeah the Mini also unearthed 7 crates of beer and dislodged a man from a sheep. Definitely V8 challenge!

"Didn't even have time to run"?

As much as they slowed the footage down, the car began rolling at least 130 metres away; at least three or four seconds.

Typically I'd be saying that crash was awesome, but in this case that is actually a pretty scary crash to watch. Insane. I'm am totally surprised no one was killed.

Doesn't it make you wonder why, if technology exists where a man can walk away from a crash like that, why can't we make our cars safer?
