2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG recreating the Carrera Panamericana – Click above to watch the video after the break

Are you as jealous as the rest of Team Autoblog that our very own Chris Paukert, better known as "El Presidente" while traveling abroad, got to snake through Mexico and Central America, recreating the famed Carrera Panamericana while piloting the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG? Yeah, thought so. But all is not lost. Please join us in reliving the journey by watching it all unfold in glorious high resolution video, along with the three accompanying photo sets below.

Epic doesn't begin to describe this trip – the cars, the country and everything in between assures us of that. Not only is it plainly obvious that a good time was had by all, it also offered up ample time to consider just how amazing the original Mercedes-Benz 300 SL of the early 1950s was. And, likewise, how impressive the latest Gullwing and its 563-horsepower naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8.

All that's left to do now is click past the break to watch the two videos. Trust us, they are most definitely worth your time.

About as interesting as it would have been to watch the SLS sit in stop and go LA traffic.

      man... that original is beautiful
Yes, the 50's original is stunning. I love looking at older cars and admiring how much better they look than what is designed today.

This video would be perfect if they were trying to advertise a luxury car that has a super soft ride and super quiet operation. This car is neither. Verrrry boring video...

I was expecting that at one point I would hear the engine scream as the car launches out of the town into windy country roads...nope. BOO!11

Sorry folks, but I still haven't seen a photograph from any angle that makes the SLS AMG look good. It's just not a good looking car. It's only claim to fame is its historial lineage and gullwing doors. But as a design, it's really bland looking . . . especially for such an expensive car(!).

Agreed. As it stands, the SLS looks at best; unfinished - at worst, inelegant...like a Dodge Viper coupe missing its rear hatch-glass.

I know the SLR was a very compromised machine, but at least it looked the part of a car worth hundreds-of-thousands of dollars. The SLS looks like an inexpensive Japanese kit car.

That said, imagine the SLS with a proper fastback roofline and the car is transformed - like I say, it looks unfinished.

        To each his own.

I've seen it in the flesh numerous times and I personally think its fantastic looking, and completely unique in its charm.

        Great job MB!

That 300SL is magical. It might be old but it still looks fantastic.

I liked this car the first time I saw it, when it was called a dodge Viper.

      ugly shoes

Disappointing to see orange peel on such a pricey car.
        Whats orange peel ?
Thank you! I was going to say the exact same thing. My $30k when new doesn't even come close to the amount of orange peel on the car(and it's now 7 years old and the paint looks better).

BTW... the video was VERY boring, I was actually contemplating a nap a few minutes in. Thanks for keeping me rested for work tomorrow Autoblog.

        @nick

I agree... it was a very boring video.

What's worse is how boring it must have been to MAKE that video.

        1. Set up camera and tripod
        2. Record 5 seconds as SLS rolls by
        3. Pack up camera and tripod
        4. Call pickup vehicle
        5. Repeat... All. Day. Long.

        well.
is it just me, or this car doesn't have road appearance? rear looks good and expensive. but the front looks like Z350, stretched.

        produce the damn essence already.

orange peel is when the paint has a kind of texture to it. it looks like what its called, if you look for it its easy to find

        Pricey?
Come on, it's half the price of the car it replaced, the SLR McLaren!
This car is either a love it or hate it.

I love it :] Has a lot of character and its distant. It has a lot of little details.
I agree, it's not a car for everyone. I like it.... I'm surprised that so many people don't like it... like comment that they don't like it.... why bother?
