The animators at Pixar have set their schedules through 2012, and while the slate includes new films like Up and Newt, it's also brimming with sequels. Following the third installment of the studio's Toy Story franchise in 2010, Pixar will release the sequel to our favorite animated homage to automobiles, Cars 2. While we don't know for sure if Lightning McQueen and Sally Carrera will return, the press release indicates that the film will be filled with old and new characters for kids and kid-like adults to enjoy. Like most of Pixar's upcoming schedule, Cars 2 will also be presented in 3D, and let me tell you, after watching Beowulf skewer Grendel in the third dimension, we can't wait for an animated fender to fly out of the screen at us. The date is set for 2012, so there's a long way to go, and this installment will be directed by Brad Lewis, who produced Ratatouille, rather than the first film's director, John Lasseter. Lasseter proved himself to be a man steeped in car culture, so Lewis has some mighty big brake shoes to fill.

2012?? Most of the kids who saw the first one won't be kids by then. So much for timely sequels.
quandmeme @ Apr 11th 2008 11:08AM
The delay shouldn't affect profitability--my kids watch 80s Disney movies as much those from the 00s. Dipping from the same will for a renewed profit

Back in the day before videotape, Disney would release its full-length animated features every seven years, which was enough time, Disney figured, to keep introducing it for a "new generation" for whom it would be fresh. You'll notice that Disney is doing the same thing with the DVD editions of its movies right now with 101 Dalmatians. I recently watched Disney's Pinnochio with my grandson and he enjoyed it as much as I did when I was a kid.
No, rushing the sequels out in a hurry is what usually causes the thin scripts. Yeah, I'll go to see Cars 2. Might even take the grandkid.

they should make an escalade with a black guy's voice and a lowered
impala with a mexican's voice, lol.
Hey, they gave the old pick-up a hillbilly voice. Fair is fair, and
stereotypes are funny because they're true, lol.
and dont forget a hooked up integra with a wigger voice :D

If you scan the one paragraph of the press release it says: LIGHTNING MCQUEEN and his friend mater. So yes Mcqueen will be back.
I just wish it ain't four years from now.
Mr. Oak @ Apr 11th 2008 10:49AM
More that half of all sequels suck. The storyline was thin at best, and does not merit a sequel. This "Kid" won't see it.
NOreasonY @ Apr 11th 2008 11:04AM
2012? jeez...i wont have enough "kid" left in me to go see it...well...maybe at lease
Galley @ Apr 11th 2008 11:05AM
That should be Brad Bird, not Brad Lewis.

That should be Brad Bird, not Brad Lewis.
Never mind, Brad Lewis produced Ratatouille. Brad Bird directed it.

Can they not come up with new concepts?
Everything is a sequel or a remake.
Meh.
Pat @ Apr 11th 2008 11:57AM
The first one wasn't a new concept either. See the movie "Doc Hollywood".
mk @ Apr 11th 2008 12:42PM
I've seen Doc Hollywood, it wasn't that bad, but no "Gone With the Wind."
Never have had the notion to watch Cars. Not going to see the sequel. Along with 98% of what Hollywood thinks is a good movie idea.
I used to love movies. Now I haven't been to the theater in quite some time, and the video store is a horror-filled bad joke. TV isn't any better.
Maybe that explains why I read autoblog so much... something to do.
Brad @ Apr 11th 2008 1:04PM
You read the first sentence that referred to the original stories "Up" and "Newt," right? Including this summer's "WALL*E," Pixar's made nine movies: one of those (Toy Story 2) has been a sequel.
500 @ Apr 11th 2008 11:14AM
Wow someone actually submitted a Chrysler Aspen? Lol! Loving the '58 Buick though...

Cool! I really loved the first movie, and even had ideas for a sequel. I imagined it could be a story about Lightning and Sally's kid, who would be a GT Porsche hoping to race in some European circuit.
ambientFLIER @ Apr 11th 2008 12:56PM
PLEASE, enough with these "cars" photoshops for real cars. It looks stupid...Even more so than the movie.
Go5Go @ Apr 11th 2008 1:50PM
I home my daughter will still be into "Cars" when she is seven as much as she is into them now!! Of course as long as its pink she likes it. lol.
I didn't take her for rides to get her to sleep.. We watched F1 races. Nothing more soothing than a screaming 18k rpm V10!
VW JUNKY @ Apr 11th 2008 2:10PM
My son is 4 now and we have just about all the metal Car's toys. The move is great. Pixar does a good job to keep parents and kids entertained. There is lots of subtle adult humor in most of there movies.

They should do the airport trucks instead!
http://www.aglassandahalffullproductions.com/?campaign_id=cadfp#/trucks/watch-ads/
And when are they ever going to learn? The "eyes" are the HEADLIGHTS, not the windshield. Duh. Stupid animators.
