At New York's Cipriani restaurant on 42nd Street, Volvo presented its sixth annual Volvo for Life Awards and named Marilyn Adams the Grand Award Winner in the Safety category. The panel of judges -- including Hank Aaron, Sen. Bill Bradley, Maya Lin, Dr. Sally Ride, Dr. Mae Jemison, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and Edsel B. Ford II -- selected Marilyn because of her Farm Safety 4 Just Kids organization that teaches, as you guessed, farm safety for the young'ins'.

At New York's Cipriani restaurant on 42nd Street, Volvo presented its fifth annual Volvo for Life Awards and named Rose Mapendo, an African refugee and mother of ten, as its Grand Award Winner in the Quality of Life category. The panel of judges -- who included Caroline Kennedy, Maya Lin, Paul Newman, Val Kilmer, and previous winners -- selected Rose because of her Mapendo Organization's refugee outreach work. Rose was nominated for the award by Susan Sarandon.

Volvo has been searching for real boots-on-the-pavement hometown heroes with its "Volvo For Life" awards for five years now. In April, Volvo will announce the winner for this year's award, the prizes for which include $1 million in contributions to to his or her favorite charities and a Volvo car for life. Given the longevity of Volvo cars, we thought it might be the same car for life, but it turns out to be a new Volvo every three years, which is a sweet deal.

Early this year we posted on three exemplary human beings that make us question what we're doing with our lives. (Writing about cars? Cars, really?) Well, after we had long forgotten about our lack of contributions to the greater good, we discovered that Dr. Ingida Asfaw, an Ethiopian-born doctor, has won the Volvo for Life Award.

Since last July Volvo has accepted 4,341 nominations for its Volvo For Life awards that honors unsung heroes in the categories of safety, quality of life and environment. The company assembled a panel of celebrity judges that includes Hank Aaron, Sir Richard Branson, Val Kilmer (huh?) and Paul Newman, among others, who then narrowed the nominees down to three category winners.
