Toyota's FJ Cruiser SUV ticked off most of the boxes the original FJ40 Land Cruiser did. It had two-door styling (thanks to hidden half-doors) and plenty of off-road capability from a traditional four-wheel-drive system and good ground clearance. But unlike the FJ40, the Cruiser never had a convertible option. At least one person decided that was necessary and had one converted to a convertible sometime in its life, and now it could be yours.
Newport Convertible Engineering
The folks Newport Convertible Engineering have made a specialty out of taking coupes and sedans and converting them into convertibles. Sometimes this results in absolutely weird creations like a Range Rover droptop, but its latest project is significantly greener. The company has developed hard and soft top conversions for the Tesla Model S, and they are already quite popular too. An investor in China has ordered 100 of them.
Newport Convertible Engineering, the Southern California company that can't keep its top on, has revealed on its website that it is now producing three different droptop versions of the Nissan GT-R Convertible. It's just another page in its work with high-end offerings like the new Range Rover and the Jaguar XJ. The idea of a convertible SUVs remains attractive enough that manufacturers are still trying to figure out how to make it work - case in point, we recently heard that Range Rover continues to debate production of the Evoque convertible. On that note, the folks at Newport Convertible Engineering, lately of Acura TL convertible fame, have given us a look at what a 2013 Range Rover Autobiography looks like with its top removed.
The roofless Acura TL you see above is a product of Newport Convertible Engineering. No stranger to taking the lids off of Acuras - and a bunch of other cars, like this Jaguar XJ and this Toyota FJ Cruiser - NCE says it was the first US coachbuilder to produce an Acura NSX convertible.
Sometimes we lament the loss of four-door convertible "parade cars." Then we see something like this and we don't miss 'em one bit. Woof.
