President Obama will visit Indianapolis, IN on Friday, rescheduling a trip to Allison Transmission, a global provider of commercial-duty automatic transmissions and hybrid-propulsion systems, that was delayed due to budget negotiations. The White House says that the President will tour Allison's facilities before speaking to workers about the importance of slashing oil imports, while also addressing the immediate need for a cleaner and more secure energy future.
After a successful first year, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has decided to initiate round two of its Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). This time around, CARB will award grants totaling $19 million to fleet customers who purchase medium- and heavy-duty hybrid trucks and buses.

A recent study conducted by Pike Research found that hybrid powertrains will find a home in some 300,000 medium- (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) trucks and buses by 2015. The study also finds that while North America currently leads the world in usage of hybrid trucks, Asia is expected to take the lead as early as next year and will probably never look back. Luxembourg's bus operator Sales-Lentz has announced the purchase of 6 brand new 7700 hybrid Volvo buses. This is the first firm purchase order of the recently-released model and means the first unit will hit the streets by the end of 2009, with the remaining five coming in 2010. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has just completed a two-year study of the hybrid buses being operated by Long Beach Transit in southern California. Unlike most transit systems using hybrid buses, Long Beach has been using a system that combines a gasoline engine with a series hybrid system. Hampton Roads Transit provides mass transit services in the region of Virginia that includes Norfolk, Virginia Beach and several other communities. The company has decided to replace an existing fleet of trolleys in Virginia Beach and battery-powered shuttle buses that run in a loop around downtown Norfolk with hybrid buses.
