Ford Canada chief executive officer, David Mondragon, told a group of people attending a business luncheon at a Toronto-area hotel that electric vehicles (EVs) will account for the slimmest fraction of the market by 2020. Mondragon explains that consumers may opt for more fuel-efficient cars if gas prices creep up, but, he said, buyers will not embrace EVs unless either a dramatic shift in behavior occurs, or prices of battery-powered vehicles drop substantially.

We're all pretty aware that this year's Detroit Auto Show will be a more somber event than in previous years. Still, drastically reduced sales and a sour economy won't stop everything in its tracks. Chrysler, for example, will bring an electric car (possibly a four-door Dodge coupe). What's Ford got? We're not sure yet, but on the heels of the lauded Fusion hybrid, we are hearing tales that Ford will at least talk about new electric vehicles during our time in Cobo Hall next week. We expect that
