It's no secret that in recent years Land Rover has been itching to reduce the mass of its products. Even before Ford sold the brand to Tata it had been working on a variety of lighter weight concepts. It looks like the next generation Range Rover will be the first benefactor of those efforts when it debuts in 2012.

Over the last several years, Mercedes-Benz has displayed a series of hybrid concepts based on several different model ranges. These have been based on various powertrain configurations including both mild and two-mode hybrids as well as both gas and diesel engines such as the C300 Bluetec hybrid pictured above. Mercedes' first two production hybrids – the S400 and ML450 – both use a 3.5-liter gasoline V6, but it looks like the company's first diesel hybrid could debut in 2011.

By the middle of the next decade Mercedes-Benz wants its entire lineup to be able to operate entirely free of petroleum. The German giant is working on a variety of technologies that will help provide crude oil free transport such as battery electrics, fuel cells and highly efficient internal combustion engines that can operate on biofuels. Mercedes has recently been letting European journalists sample some of these new powertrains at a test facility in Spain.

Mercedes-Benz has laid out a long Road to the Future, detailing its efforts to create "fuel-efficient and environmentally-sustainable premium automobiles without the need to forgo the characteristic brand features." That's fancy talk for having your German chocolate cake and eating it, too.

British environmental site Clean Green Cars announced a report that says that buying a hybrid does not have significant CO2 advantage over an equivalent diesel. Mercedes-Benz debuted the new GLK compact SUV at the Detroit Auto Show in January with a 2.2L four-cylinder Bluetec diesel. For its European coming out party in Geneva, the company will reportedly fit the GLK with a diesel-hybrid powertrain.
