In another non-surprise, the Volt handily outsold the Nissan Leaf last month.

April sales numbers are in, and the second-gen Chevy Volt once again trounces the Nissan Leaf in the US.

To turn things around, Nissan is going to need that 2nd-gen Leaf, pronto.

February sales for the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf did not surprise us. Just like they didn't in January. Or December. And probably won't in March, either.

With a new Chevy Volt to compete with, sales of the Nissan Leaf took a bit of a nosedive in November.

Despite overall sluggish sales, June 2015 represented the first time since October 2013 that the Chevy Volt outsold the Nissan Leaf in the US.

It's tempting to pop up the sales numbers for the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt each month and treat the results like the score of a sporting event. We certainly do it. However, when you're looking at low-volume cars whose numbers have been constrained by supply issues and customer confusion, these numbers don't necessarily have the same meaning as they would in scoring, for example, Toyotal Corolla sales vs. those of the Ford Focus.

There's no end to people's emotions surrounding GM's Chevy Volt. Those with hate-GM and/or hate-Obama agendas are duty-bound to rage against it because they resent the bailout and see the Volt as a direct result of that money (even though it's not). Those who can love only "pure" battery electric vehicles must disapprove because it burns some fossil fuel on days when it runs out of battery juice.

Once again, General Motors is burying the monthly sales totals for the Chevy Volt. In a press release headlined "May U.S. Retail Sales Rise 9 Percent on Demand for Fuel-Efficient Vehicles," the Volt's sales numbers are not disclosed. Instead, the total – 481 – is in the detailed PDF of the Chevrolet brand sales totals and shows the car is suffering from another month-to-month drop; GM sold 493 in April.
