Two separate problems related to inadvertent airbag deployment have prompted Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the NHTSA to recall some 2 million late-model Ram trucks.

FCA US is recalling 1.4 million vehicles in the US to send the owners a software upgrade to prevent potential hacks. The issue stems from the weakness recently discovered in the Uconnect system in a Jeep Cherokee.
Under rare circumstances, the spring in the clutch ignition interlock switch on stick-shift 2006-07 Dodge Ram, Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider pickups could fail, but one reported fatality was enough for Chrysler and NHTSA to issue a recall of nearly 67,000 vehicles.
The scope of the Takata airbag inflator recall is ballooning once again across the United States. Where Honda has elected to take its driver-side airbag campaign nationwide, Chrysler Group and Ford have now announced expanded regional actions to cover some passenger-side airbag inflators. Mazda is adding more regions, as well.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation focusing on 110,000 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups from model years 2004 to 2006. One death has already been reported, according to NHTSA, due to a potential fault with the clutch interlocks on manual-transmission versions of the heavy duty pickup.
Chrysler has announced that it will issue three separate recalls that will cover as many as 1.2 million Ram pickup trucks for "steering-system tie rods that may have been misaligned during assembly or steering-system service." The vast majority of these trucks were sold in the United States, though some trucks in Mexico, Canada or overseas will be called in, as well.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Chrysler is issuing a recall of 30,197 pickup trucks in the United States, all from the 2013 model year. The affected vehicles are the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500, all of which were built between September 9, 2012 and March 5, 2013.
