Only nine SUVs earn the highest ranking
Most new car buyers are keenly interested in safety ratings, but many aren't sure exactly how to decipher all the scores and acronyms that automakers and safety organizations use to rate specific vehicles. We've broken down the ratings and come up with a list of crossovers and SUVs that earn the very best scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Why crossovers and SUVs? Put simply, these utility vehicles have taken over as the standard family car of choice for most American buyers.
So, what's a Top Safety Pick+ award? The IIHS, an independent, nonprofit organization that was founded in 1959 with a mission to prevent crashes and reduce injuries, continuously refines its protocols and rankings in order to separate poor performers from good. And the highest ranking the group bestows is the Top Safety Pick+.
These vehicles earn Good ratings in driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. They also boast advanced crash prevention technologies and have a Good headlight rating.
