6 electric vehicles we're watching closely in 2020

As more and more automakers move toward electrification, we’re expecting to see a new flock of battery electric vehicles become available in 2020. For many, these will be the companies’ first times selling an EV, while another — Tesla — is planning its second electric crossover, its fourth mass-produced EV. Here are a handful of electric vehicles we’ll be following closely this year.

With a polarizing name, Ford’s first all-electric vehicle has already made quite a splash. And people are lining up to buy it. Ford quickly dispatched First Edition reservations, and soon followed up with statistics about the configurations customers are favoring. Perhaps to nobody’s surprise, they’re overwhelmingly choosing long-range batteries. We’re curious to see how the Mach-E is received when we finally start seeing it on the road later this year.

UPDATE: Well, that was quick. As of January 10, the Rapide E has reportedly been cancelled due to money problems at Aston Martin. Looks like we'll be waiting a little longer for an electric Aston. Here's hoping plans for the Lagonda SUV don't get derailed as well. Our original text follows:

We love the sound and feel of 12 cylinders firing in concert, which is why the Rapide E has a lot to live up to. Replacing that experience with an equally exciting electric one is a tall order, but that’s exactly what Aston Martin has promised. This won’t be quite the momentous and far-reaching rollout as some of the other more attainable EVs on this list — only 155 Rapide E examples will be produced — but it’ll be a tricky feat for this legendary legacy performance brand to produce a Bond-worthy electric.

The Volvo spinoff has already impressed us with the potent and expensive Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid. We’ll find out this year if its follow-up act, the all-electric Polestar 2, can do the same. With a more reasonable price and dashingly handsome sheetmetal, we’re feeling optimistic.

Hugely anticipated, the Taycan is a very special Porsche indeed. We’ve been following this car closely since it first arrived as the Mission E concept, and our first drive showed promise. U.S. deliveries began to trickle out in December. Now we’re curious to see what Porsche can do for electric performance going forward.
