All the parts that make it seem longer, lower, angrier

As time marches on, even icons needs a little nip and tuck now and then. Such was the case for the 2018 Ford Mustang, which, three years removed from the biggest update ever made to a Mustang (independent rear suspension, finally!), received a restyling to keep it looking fresh. The results felt controversial at first blush, but as reality set in and we've started seeing the stallions in the wild, it now seems like a natural progression of the pony car.

Think of this as a drop-top 911 GT3 Touring

The last Porsche 911 Speedster was a limited-production special that marked the end of the 997-generation 911. We've seen spy photos of that car's follow-up a few times by now, each revealing a little bit more than the last. From what we can tell, the new model is essentially a drop-top version of the 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3, 500 horsepower naturally-aspirated flat-six and all.

Lotus should capture this spirit in the next Exige

You can get the measure of a car brand by the environment in which its products are built. The narrow, bumpy, hedge-lined lanes of eastern England explain a lot about the way a Lotus goes. The character of a company's chief speaks to the brand's intentions as well. Jean-Marc Gales has been portrayed unflatteringly as a Eurocrat bean counter, but his approach has been to strip weight and cost out of the product to the benefit of performance on both track and bottom line, defining brand attributes

Aston's flagship GT sports car shows its face

With less than a month to go before the official unveiling, it appears that the 2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has been spied in Volante convertible form. The car is very clearly related to the DB11 GT sports car currently available, but with a number of updates. It should also be lighter (hence the Superleggera name) and more powerful.

More than a GT, milder than a GT C

In the Mercedes-AMG GT line, most body styles feature three or more levels of sportiness. The coupe is available in GT, GT S, GT C and GT R, and the sedan is available in 53 GT, 63 GT, and 63 GT S. But the roadster has been left out with just GT and GT C variants. That changes this year with the new GT S Roadster, which splits the difference quite evenly between the two drop-top sports cars.

Only 14 will be built

Time is nearly up for the outgoing Aston Martin Vantage coupe and convertible now that the new model has been released, but thanks to one fan of the car, it's going out in style. The company has created a special version of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage called the V600 at the request of a customer, and it will build just 14 of them, seven in each body style.

Better dynamics, but this roadster retains a brutish feel

The Aventador still reminds us of the days when supercars weren't so tractable and obedient, but rather wild, snorting and more than a bit daunting to drive fast. As a rolling expression of excess, it's hard not to fall for the open-air Aventador S's naturally aspirated scream for attention.

But does this hybrid system make me look fat?

It's official, Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed to Top Gear magazine that the next-generation Aventador and Huracán will get plug-in hybrid powertrains. Autocar reported last October that the next Huracán would get "next-generation" batteries to aid its naturally aspirated V10 when it debuts around 2022. The fate of the Aventador S's successor, however, was unclear beyond the certainty of it featuring a mid-mounted V12. Now we know it will get a naturally aspirated V12

Tougher emissions testing in Europe prompts the switch

This could be the last year to score a Jaguar with the carmaker's 3.0-liter supercharged V6. Autocar reports that Jaguar deep-sixed the XE S and XF S in the UK due to poor sales and difficulty coping with European emissions regulation changes taking place this year. The mag expects the XJ and F-Pace to lose the V6, too, but suspects the F-Type might retain the engine. It's possible, however, the bent-six with up to 380 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque might finally be retiring for a reaso

It has a 210-horsepower air-cooled engine

As charming and cute as classic Volkswagen Beetles are, there's no getting around the fact that they're not especially sleek, nor are fast. At all. That is with the exception of this, the Memminger Roadster 2.7. It's a custom Bug built by a German restoration shop called Memminger. It's low, it has extremely wide, pumped up fenders, and has been turned into a two-seat roadster. It almost looks like a Porsche 356, but bigger. And check out those sweet plaid seats.

ICYMI, the week that was, in pony car land

To conclude a long week of news pegged to the 54th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, we pass along a special salutation, the video above. And in case you missed it, here's a rundown of this week's Mustang items (and a couple from the days before). It was a busy birthday week.

Get a look inside the Z4

The weather must be getting nice in Germany, because BMW is testing Z4 prototypes at the Nürburgring with the top down. And we're not sure if it's the nice weather or something else, but BMW has also become more lax with interior camouflage. This particular prototype hardly had anything covered, allowing us to see the production-ready interior.

Ford hosted a cars and coffee at World Headquarters

The Ford Mustang turns 54 today. Despite being well into middle age, passion for the Mustang and all its variants and offshoots has never been stronger. Sure, the sales figures can tell you a lot. Ford sold 125,809 last year, more than any other sports coupe in the world. But that number doesn't say it all. Really, it takes just one visit to your local cars and coffee or a snowy celebration at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, to see what I mean.

That bikini top is ready for a summer debut

The upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder has been spied testing on the Nürburgring. The last time we posted spy shots of the Spyder was in January, a cold time of the year to flaunt its new bikini top above the shapely engine cover. This time around, the Spyder's lapping the famous German race track, looking very production ready.

Up until now, the trackday special has only been available as a kit.

A couple years back we wrote about KTM's intent to sell the mad, mad X-Bow trackday special as a complete vehicle in the United States. The X-Bow has been available in the U.S. since 2011, but buying them has been a two-part affair: first you'd buy the car, and then the engine, and you'd have to combine them yourself instead of KTM handing them over together as a functioning car. That arrangement was there because the X-Bow hasn't met federal crash standards. Finally that step can be skipped, bu

Events take place at select Mazda races

Using a video game as a feeder racing series is nothing new. Sony and Nissan have run the GT Academy for years now, rewarding the best Gran Turismo players with the chance to drive a real car. It seems Mazda wants a piece of the action. This year, it will host an iRacing Hot Lap Challenge, giving the best players a trip to the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The two fastest drivers will race head-to-head, with the winner earning a test drive in a Mazda MX-5 Miata Cup car.

The Camaro gets a new face while Ford shifts its Focus

One of these things is not like the others. And we don't mean that one is a Chevy while the rest are all from Ford. No, what we're looking at here are a bunch of performance cars, with one lone economy car thrown in for good measure.

Naturally, they're red and white with maple leaves

McLaren's MSO custom division seems to stay quite busy. Every few months they seem to have a new special configuration to offer buyers. Sometimes they're a bit silly or unimpressive, but other times they create something really unique and cool. This McLaren 570S Spider falls into the latter category. It's called the Canada Commission, and the company will build just five of them exclusively for our northern neighbors.

It's got a manual transmission, too

Toyota's FJ Cruiser SUV ticked off most of the boxes the original FJ40 Land Cruiser did. It had two-door styling (thanks to hidden half-doors) and plenty of off-road capability from a traditional four-wheel-drive system and good ground clearance. But unlike the FJ40, the Cruiser never had a convertible option. At least one person decided that was necessary and had one converted to a convertible sometime in its life, and now it could be yours.
