Toyota's mid-size truck is ruggedly handsome and is offered in tons of variations. However, its interior is below average in both quality and size. Reliability will be a plus over time, but it's far from the best to drive.

The midsize truck segment is experiencing a renaissance. Some players are being enhanced, others are being introduced, while others are being resurrected from the dead. The 2021 Toyota Tacoma would fall into the enhanced category, and despite being one of the oldest models around, it remains relevant and wildly popular due to its distinctive style, rugged off-road focus and decades of tried-and-true dependability.

For 2021, the Tacoma carries on essentially unchanged. Toyota has added a new Nightshade Edition model with dark trim finishes inside and out, and a new Lunar Rock paint finish replaces the Army Green option on TRD Pro models.

If you're shopping for a Tacoma, anything with "TRD" in the name represents the special ones. They look cooler and go places the other versions can't. And if you're not really interested in getting a Tacoma dirty, you might as well get a different, more comfortable, spacious and refined midsize truck. Power comes from a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine (159 horsepower), but you'd be wise to get the 3.5-liter V6 that produces 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the V6 Tow package, the Tacoma is good for 6,800 pounds. Like other midsize trucks, there are extended (Access Cab) and crew (Double Cab) cab body styles, but neither are particularly spacious relative competitors. The Double Cab can be paired with a short or long bed, though, which isn't possible in some other midsize trucks.
