2021 Toyota Land Cruiser
The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is a large, body-on-frame SUV that follows in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessors by providing exceptional off-road capability, substantial interior space, abundant feature content (it does cost a pretty penny for a Toyota, after all), and an ironclad reliability reputation hard-earned by those predecessors. Unfortunately, it has a number of compromises due to its devotion to off-road capability and lack of major updates for over a decade. They include cumbersome handling, poor fuel economy and unimpressive interior compared with more modern luxury crossovers.
For 2021, the only changes to the Land Cruiser come to the Heritage Edition trim introduced last year. The trim level can now be had with a third row of seats like the standard Land Cruiser, and two additional colors, a light silver and a dark silver. Consider how much you’ll actually use a third row of seats, though, as it adds extra cost to the Heritage Edition, reduces cargo capacity, and is not a comfortable place to be. Otherwise, the Heritage Edition gets the same bronze 18-inch BBS wheels, darkened exterior trim, a Yakima Megawarrior roof rack, special bronze interior details, all-weather mats and vintage Land Cruiser exterior badging as last year’s model. It's quite slick.
Besides the Heritage Edition, the 2021 Land Cruiser is basically one-size-fits-all. It comes absolutely loaded with high-end luxury equipment and technology, although it still lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It does get a unique 9-inch touchscreen, however. A rear seat entertainment system is the lone option.
Power comes from a 5.7-liter V8 good for 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. That's an ample amount, but the heavy Land Cruiser is hardly fleet of foot. Fuel economy is abysmal at 15 mpg combined.
