2021 BMW 530e

The 2021 BMW 530e is the plug-in-hybrid version of the 5 Series sedan. Introduced for the 2017 model year, the 530e combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an electric motor, and is offered with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Subtle blue exterior accents denote the 530e, although the most obvious differentiator might be the charging port, which is under a flap on the left front fender. As with all 5 Series models, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen is standard, and can be operated via iDrive click-wheel or touch. Screen-based instrumentation is also standard, with displays that are customized to the 530e. In addition to the standard Comfort, Sport, and Eco drive modes, the 530e has three additional modes chosen via its eDrive button: Auto eDrive, Max eDrive, and Battery Control. Auto is the default, while Max uses battery power alone unless the driver triggers the gasoline engine by booting the accelerator. Battery Control allows the driver to set a state of desired battery charge, and the car will work to achieve and maintain it, using the electric motor as a generator if necessary.

For 2021, BMW has increased the car’s power. It goes from 248 horsepower to 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque combined, good for 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. A new XtraBoost feature can provide 40 horsepower extra for 10 seconds at a time, too. BMW changed the exterior styling, though it’s not a huge departure from the year before. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available for free in the updated interior, as well — bigger screens are now standard.

Recharging takes 7 hours using a standard 120v household outlet. A BMW charging station using a 240-volt source reduces that time to under 3 hours, and the car also can use some public charging stations. Fuel economy ratings are not yet available for 2021. But with a fully charged battery, the 2020 530e could travel 21 miles (19 with xDrive) on battery power alone. Pricing isn’t available for the 2021 530e either.
