2020 Toyota Land Cruiser
For 60 years now, Toyota's iconic 4x4 has been cruising lands from Arizona to Zimbabwe, and from Iceland to Tierra del Fuego. The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser follows in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessors by providing exceptional off-road capability, substantial interior space, abundant feature content (it does cost a pretty penny for a Toyota, after all), and an ironclad reliability reputation hard-earned by those predecessors. It's a special type of vehicle, but its cumbersome handling, poor fuel economy and compromised interior make it a less appealing option than large luxury crossovers for those more interested in family transport around town. If, however, you're looking for family transport around forests, deserts, canyons, tundra, Serengeti … well, it's hard to do better than this legend.
For 2020, the Land Cruiser name turns 60, but the current generation is actually turning 13, itself an eternity when it comes to cars and trucks. It has received a multitude of updates over the years, but there are none for 2020. Instead, this year offers the special Heritage Edition. Available only as a two-row, five-passenger version (every other Land Cruiser has three rows and eight seats), the Heritage Edition offers special exterior paint choices, bronze 18-inch BBS wheels, darkened exterior trim, a Yakima Megawarrior roof rack, special bronze interior details, all-weather mats and vintage Land Cruiser exterior badging. It's quite slick.
Besides the Heritage Edition, the 2020 Land Cruiser is basically one-size-fits-all. It comes absolutely loaded with high-end luxury equipment and technology, although unlike most other Toyotas for 2020, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not among them. It does get a unique 9-inch touchscreen, however. A rear seat entertainment system is the lone option.
This year, the Heritage Edition is quite clearly the most appealing Land Cruiser. It's not available with three seating rows, however. That may be a problem for some, but know that the third-row is not particularly spacious, and since it folds against the cargo area walls instead of into the floor, it reduces cargo capacity as well.
Power comes from a 5.7-liter V8 good for 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. That's an ample amount, but the heavy Land Cruiser is hardly fleet of foot. Fuel economy is abysmal at 15 mpg combined.
