The CR-V isn't the best in any one area, but is very good in most including its large cabin and cargo hold, comfortable ride and secure handling. It's one weakness is an outdated and frustrating infotainment system.

The 2020 Honda CR-V is basically the one-size-fits-all crossover, appealing to a wider array of buyers than any of its competitors. It achieves that by being incredibly well-rounded and well-executed. Name a practical attribute and it almost certainly does it as well or better than its great many rivals: quality, safety, space, fuel economy, performance, feature content, value and likely reliability are all high points. And although it's not as stylish or fun to drive as some rivals, it's also not ugly or dull, either. So even if your heart is telling you to go in a different direction, it's hard to envision your head disagreeing with at least a test drive.

For 2020, the CR-V gets its first major update since being completely redesigned for 2017. The new 2020 CR-V Hybrid is the most significant addition, but the base LX sees the biggest changes. It now comes standard with the Honda Sensing accident avoidance tech and 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that were and continue to be standard on every other trim level. All CR-V trims also gets revised styling (basically some darker trim bits here or there) and a tweaked center console design.

There are five regular CR-V trim levels – LX, EX, EX-L and Touring – all of which come standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four (190 horsepower, 170 pound-feet of torque), a CVT and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is a $1,500 option on each. The LX is reasonably well-equipped for the money, but the EX's $2,510 premium is relatively small when you consider the immense number of features you get. We'd start your search there.

Pricing and other details for the Honda CR-V Hybrid hadn't been released at the time of this writing, but we do expect it to top 40 mpg and produce 212 horsepower. That would not only make it the most powerful CR-V, but also better the gas-only version's already impressive EPA fuel economy estimates of 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined with FWD, and 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined with AWD.
