2020 GMC Sierra 1500
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 continues to add features and special models to differentiate it from its Chevy Silverado counterpart and keep from being overshadowed by the highly regarded new Ram 1500 and ever-popular Ford F-150. Bowing for the 2019 model year, this latest-generation Sierra debuted a carbon fiber truck bed that claims superior dent and rust resistance. Its MultiPro tailgate incorporates a tailgate within a tailgate to create a partially lowered mid position or a drop-down step and also can incorporate audio speakers. Both are available on upper trims. A 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel arrived at midyear, joining the range of gasoline sixes and V8s.
For 2020, the ProGrade Trailering System migrates from the Sierra 2500 to the 1500 (SLT, AT4, and Denali). Its multiple camera views include one that uses an accessory camera to simulate a see-through trailer. GMC also expands availability of its optional CarbonPro truck bed beyond the Denali and AT4 to the SLT. And the 10-speed automatic transmission can be paired with a 5.3-liter V8 for the first time.
Regular, double, and crew cabs are available. The regular cab has a full 8-foot bed, the double cab gets a 6.5-foot bed and the crew cab offers a choice of 6.5-foot or a 5’8” box. Trim levels include base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4 and Denali. The off-road-themed AT4 (crew cab or double cab) includes 4WD, a 2-inch lift, Rancho shocks, a two-speed transfer case, a locking rear differential, and more. The chrome-king Denali comes as a crew cab only and includes adaptive damping, navigation, and blind-spot monitoring. The XLT, AT4 and Denali all come standard with the ProGrade trailering package and MultiPro tailgate.
The base engine is a 4.3-liter V6 (285 horsepower, 305 pound-feet) with RWD only and a six-speed automatic. Upgrades include a 2.7-liter turbo V6 (310 hp, 348 lb-ft) with an eight-speed automatic; a 5.3-liter V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft) with eight-or 10-speed automatics; and a 6.2-liter V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft) paired with the 10-speed and 4WD. There's also the 3.0-liter diesel six (277 hp, 460 lb-ft), also with the 10-speed. The diesel is the most fuel-efficient combo with EPA estimates of 23/30 mpg city/highway with 2WD and 22/26 mpg with 4WD. Towing capacity maxes out at 12,100 pounds.
