2016 Q70L New Car Test Drive

Introduction

The 2015 INFINITI Q70 includes nine different models of the luxury brand's flagship sedans, including a hybrid, all-wheel-drive variants, and a brand-new Q70L long-wheelbase configuration, with impressively increased rear seating room. 

New to all 2015 Q70 models are restyled front and rear fascias and a new grille, giving the INFINITI Q70 a family identity closely harmonized with the recently debuted Q50 sedan. Also new for 2015 are LED headlights, taillights, and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors. 

Prior to the 2014 model year, the Q70 was known as the INFINITI M. 

The overall appearance of the 2015 INFINITI Q70 has the muscular, expressive styling language of the contemporary Japanese luxury-sedan school, which continues to separate itself from more traditional European luxury sedans. The Q70 has voluptuously modeled flanks, interestingly sinister headlight clusters, a distinctive face typical of this emerging design language, all combining to produce an exceptionally low aerodynamic coefficient of drag of 0.27. 

But the Q70's componentry, design character, and performance profile are highly evolutionary, closely related to successful previous INFINITI luxury-sedan offerings. With the expected addition of new contemporary driver aids, such as available predictive forward-collision warning, surround-view rear monitor with moving-object detection, forward emergency braking, and back-up collision intervention, the Q70 maintains its competitive stance on the technology forefront. The list of Q70 driver aids and luxury furnishings is long and lavish. 

Performance continues to be exciting, as well. Two conventional powerplants are available, a 330-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, and a large 420-hp 5.6-liter V8. Neither of these engines takes advantage of the current trend toward more fuel-efficient turbocharged small-capacity engines, as featured by some Q70 competitors. While delivering excellent responsiveness, these engines' mileage ratings range from 23-26 mpg on the highway, and 16-18 mpg in the city. The Q70 Hybrid, by contrast, achieves exemplary efficiency of an EPA-estimated 29/34 mpg City/Highway. 

Q70L models feature a wheelbase nearly six inches longer wheelbase, adding 5.6 inches of rear-seat legroom, 5.9-inches of rear-seat knee room. These longer versions are available across the board. 

As a contemporary performance sedan, the Q70 is a spirited, high-quality over-the-road thoroughbred. Driven vigorously, it is agile, responsive, and well balanced. In more sedate conditions, it is comfortable, smooth, and rewardingly quiet. And because INFINITI has priced the Q70 very carefully in the market in comparison with its main competitors, such as the Lexus GS, it represents very good value in a mid-size luxury performer. 

Lineup

The 2015 INFINITI Q70 offers a choice of powertrains: Q70 3.7 comes with a 3.7-liter 24-valve DOHC 330-hp V6 with 7-speed automatic transmission (with manual shift and downshift rev matching); Q70 5.6 features a 420-hp 5.6-liter V8 with 32 valves double overhead cams and direct injection; Q70 Hybrid comes with a 330-hp 3.7-liter 24-valve DOHC V6, a 50kW electric motor, and a two-clutch parallel hybrid system. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive comes on Q70 3.7 AWD and Q70 5.6 AWD models. Q70L models feature a longer wheelbase by 5.9 inches, adding rear legroom. 

INFINITI Q70 3.7 ($49,850) comes standard with leatherette upholstery, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, dual seat memory, heated front seats, 12-volt power outlet, 7-inch info display, 6-speaker 160-watt audio AM/FM/CD. speed-sensitive audio volume, MP3/WMA/USB compatibility, Bluetooth, satellite radio, intelligent key, HomeLink, rear camera, one-touch up/down power windows, LED headlights, foglights and taillights, auto-dimming heated outside mirrors, rear window defroster, tinted windshield, power tinted moonroof, variable intermittent wipers, outside temp display, leather steering wheel and gearshift, analog clock, dual front/rear cupholders, active noise control, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, power tilt/telescoping steering column with memory, remote trunk release, 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/50R18 all-season performance tires.

Q70 Hybrid ($55,900) is equipped similarly. 

Q70 5.6 ($62,850) upgrades with leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, Bose two-channel 10-speaker audio with CD/DVD, streaming audio, round-view rear monitor with moving-object detection, navigation system, voice recognition, real-time traffic, real-time weather. Q70 5.6 AWD ($65,350) adds all-wheel drive. 

The long-wheelbase Q70L 3.7 ($51,350), Q70L 3.7 AWD ($53,500), Q70 5.6 ($64,550), and Q70 5.6 AWD ($67,050), in addition to more rear-seat roominess, also include power rear-door cinchers, heated rear seats, rear personal lamps, rear power outlet. 

Options include the Deluxe Touring Package ($3,900) with Bose 5.1 surround sound, 16-speakers; power rear sunshade; semi-aniline leather upholstery, quilted seating with increased bolsters; White Ash silver-powdered wood; suede-like headliner; soft-touch material for armrests, door inserts, center controls, and knee pads; surround view rear monitor with moving-object detection. Sport Touring Package ($2,000) includes Bose 5.1 surround sound, 16 speakers; power rear sunshade. 

Sport Package Q70 3.7 ($3,300) features 20 x 9-inch split five-spoke alloy wheels, 245/40R20 W-rated summer performance tires; Sport suspension with upgraded springs, double-piston shock absorbers; Sport front/rear brakes; paddle shifters; sport seats; aluminum pedals; stitched meter hood; sport steering wheel and shift knob; sport front fascia. Sport Package Q70 3.7 AWD ($2,500) similarly includes 20 x 9-inch split five-spoke alloy wheels, 245/40R20 all-season performance tires; Sport suspension with upgraded springs; Sport front/rear brakes; paddle shifters; sport seats; aluminum pedals; stitched meter hood; sport steering wheel and shift knob; sport front fascia; tinted front grille and headlight housings. Sport Package Q70 5.6 ($5,200) includes the contents of Sport Package Q70 3.7 plus the Sport Touring Package. Sport Package Q70 5.6 AWD ($4,500) includes the contents of Sport Package Q70 3.7 AWD plus Sport Touring Package. 

Technology Package ($3,300) includes intelligent cruise control; lane-departure warning, lane-departure prevention; distance-control assist; intelligent brake assist with forward collision warning; blind-spot warning, blind-spot intervention; front pre-crash seatbelts; active trace control; Eco pedal; adaptive front lighting system with auto-leveling headlights; forward emergency braking; back-up collision intervention; predictive forward collision warning. Performance Tire & Wheel Package ($1,150) includes 20×9-inch split five-spoke alloy wheels; 245/40R20 all-season performance tires; sport brakes with aluminum four-piston opposed front calipers/2-piston rear calipers. Pearl paint ($440) and illuminated kick plates ($440) are available. 

Safety features on all models include the mandated dual front airbags plus side-impact bags for torso protection, and side-curtain airbags for front and rear head protection; seatbelt pre-tensioners with load limiters and adjustable upper anchors; driver's seat emergency locking retractor (ELR) and passenger's side ELR and automatic locking retractor (ALR); second-row ELR and ALR; front-seat active head restraints with four-way manual adjustments. Active safety features include Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control (TCS), LATCH System, vehicle security system with vehicle immobilizer; tire-pressure monitor; hazard warning signal. Optional safety features include all-wheel drive ($2,150); package-supplied lane-departure warning (LDW), lane-departure prevention (LDP), blind-spot warning (BSW), and blind-spot intervention (BSI).
