2014 Toyota RAV4 EV

The Toyota RAV4 EV is offered in one front-wheel drive trim. It is essentially the same body as is found on the conventionally powered RAV4. The EV is distinguished by some smoothed out curves at the front and a unique grille designed to both identify the RAV4 as an electric vehicle but to provide as slippery a front-end as is possible to maximize the battery's efficiency.

This battery is a 129kW lithium-ion battery. As part of a powertrain licensed from electric car pioneer Tesla, this battery is capable of putting out enough power to make 154 horsepower and 218 lb-feet of torque at the wheels, providing a very "normal" driving profile.

The EPA rates the RAV4 EV can go up to 103 miles on a single charge. A selectable "Sport" mode makes for squeezing the most out of the electric powertrain for spirited driving, but will no-doubt reduce that range estimate. Toyota claims the RAV4 has more cargo space than any other electric vehicle.

The RAV4 EV also benefits from many of the same features that make the conventionally powered RAV4 so attractive: MacPherson struts in front and a double-wishbone rear suspension as well as 4-wheel disc brakes. Outside, there are 17-inch alloy wheels and a rear wiper and spoiler, energy-saving LED headlights, tail lights and daytime running lights.

Inside the RAV4 EV comes with standard dual-zone climate control, navigation, Toyota's Entune touchscreen-based information and vehicle systems interface, a 60/40-split rear seat, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, digital instruments, Smart Key proximity entry as well as power windows and locks.

Safety features include a total of 6 airbags, as well as anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.

Options are limited to a lengthy list of dealer-installed accessories.
