The students and teachers from West Philadelphia High School's Academy of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering already showed that they knew what they were doing months ago when their hybrid Focus finished as a semifinalist in the Automotive X-Prize and when they demonstrated their 60-mpg hybrid Attack. Once again, these high schoolers competed against some of the nation's top universities (and plenty of private companies) – and this time they didn't settle for runner up.
Andersons, one of the U.S.' major players on the ethanol production scene, has started mixing cheaper soft red winter wheat into its corn-based biofuel. This move, according to Andersons, will drive down costs and lessen demand for corn. Andersons says the soft red winter wheat harvest is peaking, so the stuff is available in mass quantities. It's estimated that Andersons is currently mixing ten percent wheat in with corn.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is often accused of imposing regulations that raise costs, but now it's looking to end an outdated requirement – and that could reduce costs for gas station owners.
Perhaps it's time that insurance companies start taking a closer look the policies they dole out. San Francisco-based Quality Planning agrees, and that's why the company works with insurers to help cut down on some of the fraud found throughout the industry. One area that's a bit surprising? The amount of luxury cars that wind up covered as farm equipment.
