Elon Musk's new California engineering headquarters will have a particular focus on artificial intelligence, CNBC reported.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk announced that Tesla was expanding its engineering headquarters in California, taking over office space in Palo Alto once occupied by Hewlett-Packard. Tesla has been based in Austin, Texas since 2021.
Musk told CNBC that Tesla is "kind of a dual-headquartered company ... we're a California-Texas company," and the new facility was "effectively a headquarters of Tesla."
The outlet reported that Tesla would focus on hiring engineers skilled in fields including artificial intelligence. It's unclear exactly how many new jobs will be added.
On Wednesday, the company tweeted that it was recruiting for engineering roles in California.
AI is essential for Tesla's self-driving technology and robotics. The plans will help to accelerate the production of some of this technology, per CNBC.
California is home to some companies that make the most use of AI, including Google, Meta, and OpenAI, the company behind the chatbot ChatGPT. In an interview with CNBC, California governor Gavin Newsom said all the "elite engineers" in the industry were based in the state.
Tesla employed about 47,000 workers in California as of January. Tesla's former director of AI, California-based Andrej Karpathy, left to rejoin OpenAI earlier this month.
Representatives for Tesla did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.
