Nissan’s 2018 Frontier pickup goes on sale starting near $19,000

Nissan finally took the wraps off the 2018 Frontier midsize pickup, releasing photos and pricing for the truck that is now on sale at dealerships. It gets standard RearView Monitor and upgraded base-grade content, including Bluetooth phone system, a 5-inch color display audio system and Apple's Siri Eyes Free integration. An all-new Midnight Edition Frontier, with a gloss-black grille, aluminum-alloy wheels and other features, will be available later in a choice of Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic and Glacier White exterior colors.

Otherwise, the truck, which comes in a wide variety of King Cab and Crew Cab models and trim configurations, doesn't appear to break the mold much. Signature Nissan themes come standard, including angled strut grille, large bumpers, short front and rear overhangs, a tailgate spoiler and stamped, geometric fender flares. It also gets a tinted front window, rear privacy glass and a rear-bumper hitch ball provision. Upgrade to the SL trim and you get chrome on the front grille, outside mirrors and door handles, tubular step rails, front fog lights and a tilt and power sliding moonroof, also available on the Crew Cab SV.

The Crew Cab SV also comes with a long bed option that measures more than 13 inches longer than the standard crew bed. Both Crew Cab and King Cab versions offer an available factory spray-on bedliner and Utili-track Channel System, which features five special cross-section rails mounted in the bed, which pair with removable utility cleats to provide multiple options for securing cargo.

Inside, both King Cab and Crew Cab models get large rear doors for accessing rear seats and cargo areas and flip-up rear seats, with storage boxes tucked beneath them. There's also a locking dual glove box, center console storage, one-liter bottle storage in the front door panels and multiple cupholders (it's the American Way, doncha know?) and power points standard. Frontier Crew Cab models are available in leather-appointed interior.

Under the hood, buyers will get a choice of a 4.0-liter DOHC V6 kicking out 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.5-liter inline-four (available in King Cab version only) generating 152 horsepower, the same as previous models. Both come with the option of a 5-speed automatic transmission; the V6 is also available in a 6-speed manual, while the inline-four comes with an optional 5-speed manual trans. Towing capacity is rated at up to 6,690 pounds when properly equipped.

A high-tensile-strength steel F-Alpha platform underpins the Frontier, while a 125.9-inch wheelbase adds to ride comfort and an all-steel double-wishbone suspension and solid axle rear suspension with overselling leaf springs and a long suspension stroke benefit off-road performance. Frontier 4x4 models come with an optional four-wheel limited-slip system, which transfers power to the drive wheels with more grip on low-traction surfaces.

Suggested list prices start at $24,300 for the Crew Cab and $18,990 for the King Cab version, which is on par with previous version as well.

Nissan announced in mid-September that it was finally going to do a ground-up redesign of the Frontier, which is essentially unchanged since 2005, but it did not provide timing for the new truck.
