Thieves make ATM withdrawal using a forklift

Police in Conway, Ark., over the weekend released security-camera video of an ATM theft. This wasn't a stickup yielding a few hundred dollars. Instead, the thieves took the whole cash machine, using a forklift.

The video shows an exterior shot of the forklift approaching the First Service Bank of Conway at 3:30 a.m. Aug. 16. A really huge forklift, actually — a Caterpillar. Hence the cops' suspicion that the perps are in the construction industry. No person is visible during the theft, so police are trying to identify the specific machine.

The forklift driver deftly skewers the ATM with one of the tines of the forklift, lifts the cash machine off its foundation, and away they go.

Back during the recession in 2010, Time magazine reported a rise in thefts of entire cash machines and noted that one ATM can contain anywhere from $10,000 up to $200,000 — though most would never contain the high end of that range.

And here's something else many ATMs are said to contain: a GPS tracking device.
