Watch a Camaro ZL1 hit 180 mph - with two gears to spare

High speed in the hands of Hennessey.

The crucial moment in this video comes after a somewhat respectable buildup. In the clip, Hennessey Performance is benchmarking the acceleration capabilities of a bone stock 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 – that one with a great big bunch of track-worthy upgrades, so calling it stock can be considered a bit rich. But quibbles aside, the 640-horsepower supercharged Camaro has some serious chops, and a point of note is that the dropped-for-2018 10-speed automatic shifts to eighth gear at 180 mph. There are still two perfectly good gears left unused!

Hennessey's measurements are convincing: the Camaro reaches 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, 100 mph in 7.6 seconds, and the aforementioned 180 mph only takes 26.2 seconds.

The acceleration run is in preparation for the new EXORCIST Camaro, as Hennessey lovingly calls it. The head-turner of a tuner Camaro will have 1,000 horsepower coaxed from the ZL1 underpinnings, and 60 mph will come straight at you at less than 3 seconds, if Hennessey gets it right. On top of a regular-issue ZL1, the package is priced at $55,000, and beefing up the 10-speed automatic is 50 bucks short of $10k.
