Everything we know about the 2018 Ford Mustang

November 21, 2016: It's been a little while since we've heard any news about the upcoming Mustang, but the Mustang6g forums claim to have stumbled across some dealer options information that seems legit, although nothing is official until Ford makes it official. That being said, the big news is that the entry level V6 is probably dead, which is not surprising at all given the focus (no pun intended) on the 2.3-liter EcoBoost model that sits above it. The six-speed auto will be dropped for a 10-speed unit that's used in the F-150. Also, the EcoBoost and GT models will gain a MagneRide suspension option a Performance Package 2. The latter is likely to be even more track-oriented than the current Performance Pack. A Shelby GT500 is coming, but probably not until 2019 or 2020. October 7, 2016: Today is a big day for Mustang spy photos. In addition to a Stang with a bizarre hood bulge, we also have a glimpse of the next convertible. Unfortunately in the case of these images, Ford has once again been thorough in its application of camouflage. As a result, there's very little we can tell about the updated model. It does appear that the grille opening is positioned a bit lower than the current model, but that's the most we can see. Whatever changes have been made, they won't be particularly major, though they're still clearly significant enough that Ford wants them well under wraps.

October 7, 2016: Our spy photographer has caught an unusual addition to the next Ford Mustang. Perched atop this prototype's hood is a makeshift bump, which could mean we'll be seeing some sort of powertrain revision on the updated car. We're not really sure what could have changed to require such an odd bulge. The size and positioning would seem indicative of a sort of scoop or possibly vent, but the bump is closed off on all sides, which would make it pointless. It certainly would be cool if Ford decided to reintroduce hood-mounted gauges like on the old Pontiac GTO, but that's unlikely. Other than the bulge, there's not much new here, as the car bears the current model's sheetmetal.

September 27, 2016: According to photos taken by our spy photographer, the Mustang may be getting a refresh soon. The prototype pictured doesn't look radically different, but we expect there are some noticeable changes considering the amount of camouflage. Every panel, including the rear quarter windows are covered by eye-distracting vinyl. They certainly did a good job with the disguise because we can hardly see anything through it, but the lights at least look roughly the same.

Other items to note are the brakes and exhaust. This prototype is equipped with Brembo brakes, but shows no other obvious performance additions such as sticky tires and spoilers, so we believe this isn't anything more radical than a Mustang GT. The exhaust also features emissions testing equipment, which means the company is testing some updates to the powertrain, perhaps updates for more power.
