In this connected age that we are currently sojourning together through, billions of names can be googled daily and globally. The results of those searches can affect hiring decisions, contract negotiations, personal and business growth. The other side is just as true, the lack of response to online searches can bury opportunities to be a part of those same hiring decisions, contract negotiations, and impede your personal or business growth.
So, if you have a passion, pursue it and document it digitally. It will improve your opportunities for success and set you up with many more connections. It will show others who you are and your focus regardless of avenue they look you up. That is to say that when they look you up on any online engine or social media stream such as, Google, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. they not only find you, but also find that you have a clear consistent message. The unity of those streams (if they are active) tell a researcher that you've got it together and it also gives them the opportunity to decide whether or not they would like to ally with you. The streams build credibility and in some cases get you labeled as an "Expert". Those connections can then in turn lead you to accomplish your dreams or launch you to heights beyond.
So, what does this have to do with the automotive field? I was having some trouble with a vehicle. So, I googled for a possible solution. I wasn't surprised to come across many Youtube videos dealing with the same concern for their vehicle. What I was surprised to find however, was a 13 year old boy with repair videos on his own Youtube channel. He has a few videos showing people how to replace x, y, and z on their vehicle and how to clear the corresponding error codes. He was thorough and got the job done correctly in a likeable way – not a boring professor speaking in a monotone voice to students type of way.
I'll tell you why that's brilliant. Simply, if that same teenager decides to pursue a mechanical path for his future, as a result of establishing his media outreach early he can now show prospective employers that the mechanic aspect of his life has been in his blood since he was very young. Furthermore, he can show that he also understands the production value of connecting with customers in a likeable way through person-to-person or social media communication, which is valuable asset to any prospective employer.
If you were a prospective employer looking at digital resumes, wouldn't someone who can present themselves and their own history in the industry to you before they walk through the door be more appetizing than somebody whose name is buried in pages and pages of Google search results? As an employer, wouldn't you be more apt to snap somebody up that you know understands your business even before they walk through the door for the interview? That is what branding yourself early accomplishes. It gets you a step ahead of others.
If you have a passion, pursue it and brand yourself early. Assuming you don't have negative press online, that next job or new contract can be a lot closer that you think. If you do have negative press online, address it quickly in a classy respectful way, but keep updating your channels regularly. You might even research how to overcome bad press online. It's amazing what you come across online, isn't it?
As an aside,... Yes, I am aware I used "googled" as a verb twice in this writing. It's perfectly acceptable now.
