Have you really read all of the automotive technician jobs you’ve been looking at on the web and through the local papers? If you are interested in mechanic jobs, it is important to have a solid vocational education on how to work on vehicles. For many, it is a dream job. They get to work on cars and trucks, which they love, and they get to work with their hands and solve problems. Of course, one of the big questions people have when they start thinking about this career is how much they could potentially make. After all, people want jobs where there is a good earning potential.
In the United States, the average annual salary for mechanics varies substantially between around $31,000 per year to $41,000 per year. Keep in mind that this can vary quite a bit, and some states may fall outside of the average range. The state of Washington for example, is one of the highest paying states in the country when it comes to mechanics. The mean annual wage in Washington is $44,860 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
However, you need to have a good solid education in auto mechanics before you can begin to earn this type of salary.
Getting the proper training
In the state of Washington, there are currently around 23 colleges that offer students the option to take auto mechanics and to get a degree in the field.
Some may find that they want to get out of the state to do their training, and they may have heard of a school called Universal Technical Institute. UTI is a very popular school that has a comprehensive 51-week program that teaches students how to diagnose problems with vehicles, as well as how to maintain and repair them. They learn everything from the basics about engines through advanced controls.
Having a good education to get started in the field is important, but you might find that you want to continue your education through added certifications later.
The following are some of the top schools in the state:
- Clark College
- Shoreline Community College
- Green River Community College
- Spokane Community College
- Walla Walla Community College
More certifications could mean more money
One of the reasons that you may want to consider getting more certifications in your career as a mechanic is because it has the potential to increase the amount of money that you earn. When you have more certifications, it makes you more valuable. ASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is available in nine specialties. These include brakes, engine repair, heating and air-conditioning, suspension and steering, and more. Getting ASE certified in all nine areas can allow you to get ASE Master Technician certificate.
While you could get by with a typical vocational education as an auto mechanic, it does make sense to pursue further credentials and certifications for those who want to make more money.
